The White Lady of Livermore Maine

Posted on November 16, 2009

The White Lady of Livermore, Maine/ Miss Florence Agnes Nelson lives again!

My grandparents house, on my dad’s side of the family, has been known to be haunted for at least nearly two decades. My cousins, now almost 18, used to talk about “The White Lady” in the rocking chair. I want to tell you a few brief true stories about my grandparents house. The first one, is one of my favorites.

When my cousin’s were around the toddler age, they used to tell my grandmother that they could see a woman they called the “White Lady.” One day, when my grandmother was babysitting them at her house, one of my cousin walked up the stairs to the second floor, starred down at my grandmother at the bottom of the stairs, and yelled “Bupa!” (Bupa is my grandfather. He was at work at the time. I will explain more in a moment.)

My grandmother was confused by my cousin’s statement, so she said “What do you mean? Bupa went to work, remember? He kissed you goodbye.” In response, one of my cousins pointed over my grandmothers shoulder saying “Then, who’s that?”

It frightened my grandmother deeply because she thought that someone might have broke into the house. Years later, after I was born, my grandmother told me she turned around to see what my cousin was pointing at. Nobody was there.

Since as long as my grandparents could remember, strange things have been happening at my grandparents house. Not much new ghostly activity has been said lately to me. But, when the haunting was common, my grandmother told me about her seeing shadowy figures at the corner of her eyes, she has had many strange pictures that many people cant explain from inside the house, hearing muffled voices, things moving around, electronic turning on and off. My grandmother said sometimes she is in bed at night and she hears voices as if “the radio downstairs was left on.” But everything is turned off.

Now, as some of you may be think right now, your probably thinking my family is a bunch of crazy moron’s. But, let me tell you my story that I believe, to have actually seen the “White Lady.”

Around October of 2008, I spent a night or two at my grandparents house. There had been problems in the family for many years, and I wasn’t very close yet to my grandparents because at the time, I didn’t really know them.

The first four or five times I slept overnight, I was afraid to sleep in a room alone because I had heard at lot of the stories about this house. So, my grandmother and I slept in a large bed in the master bedroom, and my grandfather offered to sleep in the guest room. In the middle of the night, for some strange reason I still don’t understand, I randomly woke up and sat up in bed. I randomly look around the room, until I focused on the partly closed door. (I like sleeping with doors shut, so I noticed it right away.) I kept starring at the door, until I saw a white apparition appear at the top of the stairs. ( When looking through the partly open door, you can see the very top of the stairs.) She appeared so suddenly, to me, it looked like she had actually walked (or floated) up the stairs.

The reason I am saying ” a woman” is because I could see the outline of her hair hanging behind her back, I could see the outline of her waist, (which was pretty thin.) her dress that was puffed out a little that ended at the ankles, and she had a very graceful, pretty way of walking. To womanly to be a man.

Another thing, which I will explain in details, is I said “outline” so often because she was just a white glowing shape of a woman. The outline. There was no color contrast on any part of her. She reminded me of a very beautiful young woman you would see in older romance movies. Ok, know I will continue with the story.

As I said, when I saw her at the top of the stairs, her head direction was pointed straight ahead. ( She was looking down the hallway towards the room where my grandfather was sleeping.) As I kept starring, she finally was aware that I was there watching her. This is my favorite part of my experience. It makes me feel special. I will explain why in a minute. I saw the shape of her head move. It wasn’t a side ways view, it was as if I was looking at her face. ( Which she had no facial features. Just a faceless white cloud that was in human shape.) I watched closely and saw her head turn to look at me directly. She was actually looking right at me! In the face! Then, after probably 5 seconds of her looking at me, she dissolved into a mist and floated into the room next to me.

There are a few things I want to tell you I regret. I wish so badly that I would have woken up my grandmother at my side. I don’t think she believes that I actually might have seen the ” White Lady” because nearly six months later, I told her what happened that night. She joked the next time I slept overnight. She told me ” you wake me up if you see the “White Lady,” she would smirk. I didn’t wake up that night to see her. I slept peacefully.

I also wish that I would have had my camera with me. But, I didn’t get my first camera until nearly two months later.

Now that my story is finished, I wish to tell you what I found from historical records my grandmother has. A woman who became a writer in the late 1940′s lived at my grandparents house. Her name was Florence Agnes Nelson. She wrote a book called Lest We Forget. In the 1930′s and 1940′s she was the famous woman of the town. She was in the newspaper for her huge collections of natural artifacts and stories of traveling all over the world. She literally turned her house into a mini museum! I have seen pictures of her treasures. She had bones, ( even some from a human Indian!) jars of preserved insects, real stuffed alligators, compressions of butterflies in frames, everything! I don’t know when she died, but I’m almost absolutely sure she is because I found out she was born in 1868. She was a old woman when she wrote that book in the late 1940′s.

There have been rumors that Miss Nelson never had children and was never married. I don’t no if that’s true, but I believe it is. In all the newspaper articles about her they always referred to her as “Miss Nelson” or ” all alone.”

I hope that some time soon I shall find out of the ” White Lady” really is Miss Florence Agnes Nelson. I want to communicate with her so badly.

you’ve got some great experiences haley!! its strange she didn’t have a face too. she must have been quite a outgoing lady in her time! thanks for sharing

what a wonderful post,,,, and,,, no,, you are not crazy!!! it does sound like she is there in the house.. you didnt seem afraid of her, maybe she just loved her house so much she decided to stay after she passed on….that does happen!!! sometimes a camera works, and sometimes it doesnt.. i have also tried, and have had a few good pics over the years,, i dont think these spirits like thier photos taken…

Dont try to hard to communicate, as it might upset her, just let her appear to you….she may, or she may not…. i think she is just curious of who is in her house,,,,, you being a guest,, im sure she was just checking you out!!!! im sure your grandparents are used to all of this,,, and this lady is used to them being there…

many spirits are curious, as we are, and they can be frightened by us also… just as we canbe of them…..

i really enjoyed your story,, it was very calming to me…. take care,, ktm

Hi trolldoll and ktm. To haley your story of your EXPERIENCE is WONDERFUL you have conveyed it as if you are directly speaking to me. I regret one thing that is she had bones of an Indian coz I am an indian and also an human. If she had bones of an human or anyother animal i would call her cruel and i wouldn’t say she has sympathy towards you and i don’t encourage you to contact her! With frozen blood of hearts of love Manik!@!@!

  4. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Hi Manik…..how are ya hun??? I like collecting things,, but human bones.. i dont think so,, but remember,, this was not her grandmother, this was the original owner,, or someone that lived there before…

in fact,, my hubby has found a few bones,, we think ,of animals,,,, in our garden area, at the back of our yard.. he buried them and said a prayer.. we feel that even animal bones deserve a proper burial…… we have also found,, what could be old tombstones.. but not sure!!! we have a lot of respect for the dead!!!

you see,, this land, untill 2006, had not been touched.. by looking at some old maps, and my hubby has looked on the internet,, this land looks like it used to be farmland, with a few homes, and barns on it.. im sure it was long ago,, as it was undeveloped….we have also found some very old nails, and other metal objects, that look like they could have been used for some type of plowing device…..

If these really are tombstones that are coming out of the ground as the rain washes them,, thats ok with us.. we will just have a cemetery in our yard!!! we are at peace with the dead….. we have put a nice bench, and planted some pretty bushes in the garden area.. it looks like a park.. we own almost an acre of land….so,, the garden area is probably one forth of that,, pretty big…..

we have planted many veggies in the garden the past 2 years, as we have only been here for 2 years…. they seem very happy, and have served us well… i freeze a lot, for the winter….. i feel at peace,, here on this land!!!! and the mountains are right there,,,,, it is beautiful…..

anyway,, i totally got away from the subject!!!! i stick with my comment…..it is safer to just let this ghost roam around freely…. like you said manik,, you just never know why she is there,, you know the old saying…. leave well enough alone…. i think this does pertain to this story….Hi Haley,,, i hope you are doing well, hun…..

by the way,, i know there are spirits here in my home and property,, but,, they seem harmless…. remember the colors?? that i posted about,, all of that seems to have calmed down… but i will tell ya,,, that totally freaked me out……. thinking back,, i was so worried that somone was ill,,,,, come to find out,, it was me!!!!! i had so much anxiety, because i didnt know who i was supposed to be helping…. now i know!!!!

take care all,,,,, luv you tons,,,,, ktm

    Hey Haley;

Wonderful story, it is similar to my story ( Woman in the white robe) if you would like to read it, I think that the white lady may be the old owner, I loved the part of ( No face), now I feel terrifying.I wish you can share with a nother story sooner.
    Thanks

  9. KC says:

    Hi Haley,
It’s funny, we share the same last name & may actually be kin as the Cook side of my family are from the Maine, N.H., Mass. & R.I. area before coming down to New Jersey in the late 1700s early 1800s. Anyhooo, have you looked to see if there are any pictures of Florence Agnes Nelson for you to compare? I am sure there are plenty to be seen in the library in town. You can also see talk the town’s historical society / group or whatever they call themselves. It’s possible that it is she who is hanging around. Then again, see if the library has any more info on your grandparent’s property. It may be that the “white lady” is a ghost of an inhabitant from before Miss Nelson’s staying there. Most ghosts/spirits are benign & just go about their business, not meaning harm or to scare anyone. It seems that this may be the case with the “white lady.” See if you can find out more about the property & you may be surprised that there was another family that she can be connected to. It’s fun to look up historical info on houses & properties if it’s available. Sadly, I currently live in a “dormant” (for the most part) house that was built in 1954 by my husband’s grandparents & before it was built it was just part of a farm & woods, so there’s nothing more to learn about the property. Thanks for sharing your experience.
    KC

    Hi Haley,
    love your story. Absoloutely brilliant.
First of all i’d like to say that the book you mentioned gave me goosebumps when you did as, i remember today i was watching a programme and i can see the “lest” floating on water.
Is there any water near your grandparents house?
Secondly is, i very rarely but surely see a black outline shape, which is also a woman. (when i see black shapes i immediately believe they are not here for the good)
i haved tried communicating with this person and i have also discovered by communicating with this person that it is a woman and that she lived in this house ( the one i am living in now) keep your experiences posted please.
    all the best x

i too have seen a shadow man once. it was during the day and he was back lit by a sunny shaded window. he looked to be dressed modernly as in a t shirt and jeans from his silloette. i believe him to be a former owner of the house who died a few years ago from cancer. i have not seen him since and all the sightings we’ve had are far and few between. they are benign and cause no bad activity. but thats our old house!! so don’t believe that they are all bad. thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject peace 2 hope!!
