The house that I grew up in was built by my grandparents in the late 1940′s. The area was surrounded by big stately houses built in the early 1800′s. They all had private family cemeteries behind them. Just down the road was, or still is, a civil war cemetery. The whole area is creepy complete with a mental institution now turned prison at the end of the road.
Upon entering my house there was always a heavy feeling in the air almost like a pressure. A lot of my friends would come to spend the night only later to leave saying they were sick never to return again. Ever since I can remember the house always gave me an ill-feeling. Our family dog would sit under the table and just move his eyes all around. I knew they were there you could not of not felt their presence.
Growing up my Mom would let me and my brother stay home from school a lot. It wasn’t til years later I found out why. When she was alone in the house “they” would change the TV channel and move furniture around upstairs (my bedroom at the time)!
One year my father decided to paint the exterior of the house so we took a picture of the front of the house. There were two picture windows in the front and when the film was developed there were four white figures in a portrait like fashion (almost like they were waiting to pose) standing in the window of my parent’s bedroom. This is around the time that we started to ask why there was a statue of the virgin Mary hidden in the rafters of the basement.To protect the house was the only answer we got.
Strange things happened all the time. When coming up stairs a black shadow would slide along the wall and follow me down. I told my Mom who said that the same thing happens to her, that’s why she just put our laundry folded on the stairs and never went up. My father claims he got up to get a drink of water one night and bumped into something and nothing was there. We already knew they were there cause of the picture.
My parents ended up divorcing when I was 20. I had already married and was living in the same town. My father stayed in the house and remarried. She, being from Florida, they decided to fix the house and sell it to move to Florida. She was still in Florida and I went over to the house one night my dad was there. He said that he was getting ready to go out and that I should remember to turn out all the lights and lock the door before leaving. He left so I went upstairs to my “old” bedroom. I was sitting at a vanity putting on makeup and suddenly I got this strange sensation that every hair on the back of my neck was standing up. I looked over and there was this white figure of a man standing with his arms folded looking at me. I ran out of that house so fast that you could of seen a smoke trail. Now this is the interesting part, not long before my grandmother had told my brother that when the house was being built the mason’s wife died in the basement. This was the mason’s last job before he retired and he wanted to take a picture of him and his wife on his last job. The stairs in the basement weren’t built yet and his wife had to descend using a ladder. She was a heavy set woman and while climbing down had a heart attack and died in the basement. That doesn’t explain the two others in the photo.
My father’s wife came back to help sell the house and this is what she said: “I was standing at the foot of the stairs with your father and he asked me what I thought about the way the house looked”. She said just right then and there you could hear something running down the stairs and a cold blast of air passed their faces and what’s more you could hear the front door slamming. They sold the house and I’ve been back a few times to see the owners who say there is nothing strange in the house. Even myself had felt a clearing in the air like a lifting of the pressure the house felt… well empty. There are a lot more things that happened in this house but that I think that would take too long. I’m not the only one who saw things there. If you know where the old Rome state school is then you’ll know what area.

What a creepy house. I wouln’t go back. My dads house is haunted too. He lives alone and he always tells me that he can hear someone one the kitchen and he can hear dishes move from time to time and this one time a couple of months ago,my sister in law had stayed there while my dad was out and she said she was sitting there watching the kids and all of the sudden she heard someone cough in the back room and she said that her and the kids were scared , she thought my dad was back and nobody was in the house . anyways I have this picture of the inside of the house and there is about 75 or more orbs all over the picture, at first I thought it was the camera, but when I took another picture they were all gone but a few. I have them posted on the Bonnie Hunt web page. if you want to see the. I will post them on my home page so you can see what I am talking about.

Very, Very interesting. Is there more episodes to this story? I think I know the area this author Karen is talking about. Very interested to read more about this house. When referring to the Old Rome State School does that mean up-state New York? If so that is a very old Historical area of the North East of the United States. Let us have another chapter of this story.

well…u tell in the storie that the new owners never saw or felt nothing? pretty strange did any member of ur family play o played with the ouija? do u go to church? how often? do u pray at night? think about this questions because not all people can see them me personally i have never seen anything but im close to church

reply to KAren: Yes I know THAT area..I once met a Man from there, & He would get VERY strange when the conversations would turn to the Paranormal. All most like He was a different person, I think He was possessed! That area has LOTS of strange occurences I hear. His son was really strange………I had to get OUT of THERE!
Verna, Yes it’s true that this area is very haunted,but I would like to ask did you meet this man in that area? There are lot’s of stories like that around here and when you say possessed , what do you think he was possessed by?
Karen: you mentioned an old Civil War cementary down the road from your House, Well this Man when I feel He was possessed……would jump up & say they are near I’ve got to clean my guns line them up, get the ammno. I feel He had an old soldier from the Civil War or maybe the French & Indian War. in Him.There was so many founding Wars in that area I’m just now sure. He would get the knives out to sharpen also. What do you think??
Verna, ummm, are you sure that he is from the same area that I’m talking about? If he is I don’t know maybe someone from the civil war haunted him it’s hard to tell in these cases,maybe he was a reincarnation of an old soldier from that area,also I must add that George Washinton was in that area also. Maybe it could be a case of true possession, where is that man now?
Karen ..You re-call I said this man had a VERY strange son, well He was supposed to be a twin, I would see both of the sons but NEVER at the same time. I’m sure there was only 1 son but He took on a twins personality at times. The rarely seen twin was very nice & mild mannered, the other was weird & would bring in odd animals He trapped & cook them. No I never ate any of his cooking, I’m sure you are thinking that! I really believe some of these creatures were road kill. I stayed several weeks, but life got more strange by the day, I started to fear for my life or at least my sanity. I’m getting chills recalling all this.

Hey every one this has become so strange for Me..since I replied to the Mason & Wife story I get so sleepy every time I start to recall & re-tell the events of that time I spent in Up-State New York with that Man I met. The whole day yesterday I could not leave the house. Every time I started to the door something stopped Me from going out, NOW I’m hearing people in my house –BUT no one is here but ME. My phone has stopped working too! I need to lay down…..to be continued

bre bre, yeah guess will never know why, and when you asked about the religion and the ouija board, I can say that we are Roman Catholic and never played the ouija board, once my brother did, but those things we already in the house before that.

Hi Jackie, no nothing strang has ever happened after I moved out. Plus I moved to Europe! It was a really wierd house and I’m glad they didn’t follow me! But I can “feel” a presence when it is around me, and I’ve never felt anything of seen anything since then!

this is a good story! vey creepy. I cant say ive seen anything like that but when my uncle was 3 him and his parents were getting ready to move out well my uncle was very scared of the dark and he wouldnt go into any dark room by himself ..anyway his mom was running him some bath water and she went to go get him and she couldnt find him anywhere. so then she decided to check in the attic, even though its dark in the attic and he wouldnt be in there. well when she got up in the attic she seen him. Then she asked him what he was doing in the attic, in the dark by his self and he said “im not by myself i was playing with the little girl”. so that scared her cause there was no little girl so she did some research and found out that a little girl had feel down the stairs and broke her neck and died in the house. thank god they moved cause i would not be visiting..
Kayla18 I know I was witness to all that and I can’t explain why they were there except that the wife died in the basement, that”s wierd about your uncle I know that I would freak if a kid said that to me! The spirit world is very much alive and around us everyday!
Karen M. People that get to see stuff like that are lucky in a way in my eyes. It would be scary but id like to see something like that. My mom told me i seen an angel at church when i was 5, she said i told her but i dont remember..lol so i dont believe that. and yes they most deffently are around us even though not everyone gets to see them:(
Kayla18 I believe that, I have pictures of my daughter’s baptisim and there was a white circle all over in the church, then people told me it was the window, but the same thing came up in the restaurant where there was no windows I want to put these pics on internet cause I want to know if it was the Holy Ghost!
