Schuck Farm Tragedy

Posted on September 28, 2009

It seems like the more stories I read I am remembering more encounters myself. This is an especially scary one for me as my nephew witnessed it with me.

Outside of a small town in south central Minnesota is a dense wooded area known only as “the old Schuck Farm”. I became friends with one of the descendants of the Schucks after the encounter I am going to retell you now. I went to the Court House with my niece after this story and these are the facts.

Back in 1903 a family names Schuck moved onto a large parcel of land to the west of Waseca Minnesota. Although I am not sure how the mother and oldest son died they did die on the farm not long after moving there. In the spring of 1909 while two teen aged daughters were in town at a friends doing home work and an older son was at work, two men came into the farm house and bludgeoned Mr. Schuck and his 11 year old daughter with hammers. The 9 year old son managed to jump out a window and run across the field to try to get help but he was caught and killed in the field. The two men fled the scene and were never caught. When the others returned home they beheld a grisly sight. Those are the facts about the murders. Just when the family abandoned the property is unknown, but although it did remain in the family no-one has lived there for many years and the farm land is unused (at least when I lived there).

In late Sept 1992 while our family was celebrating my mothers birthday my niece got to talking about the Schuck farm- she had partied there with friends and said it was a spooky place. My brother, who is skeptical but curious about the paranormal asked her to show him where the farm was at. I said I wanted to ride along and so did my nephew Joe. It was around 5:00 or so and still bright outside so off we all went to see the famed Schuck Farm.

My niece got us there in about 10 minutes and the woods sure were thick and overgrown – it looked pitch black in those woods. There was a one lane road through the tall grass down to the woods so my brother slowly drove his car down to the woods. There was a thin rusty chain and a sign hanging from it that said ‘keep out’ so my brother decided we best head out before the cops come. To get out he backed into the grass carefully – there was no way to tell if there was a ditch or hole or anything. Joe and I were in the back seat. As my brother started to pull his car ahead and go back down the lane, Joe and I turned and looked back into those dark woods. Then it happened! We both saw an old man in bib overall’s, a flannel shirt and a wide brimmed straw hat walk out of the woods onto the road where we were just parked. “Oh man!” Joe and I both yelled, “Someone’s there!” my niece and brother looked back and the old man was gone! They both laughed at us, “Did you see Old Man Schuck?” my niece asked half laughing. But Joe and I know what we saw. It was after this that my niece and I went to the historical society and found out what the facts behind all the stories were.

There is more to the story…since the Schucks were realatives on my Grandmother’s side…there was a safe taken from the house and never found. No one in the family knows what was in the safe, but rumor is it was dumped on the property. The case is still listed as unsolved. Hope to get up that way someday and see the property…who knows, might even meet Old Man Schuck….
