Haunted Old House In Bothwell, Ontario

Posted on May 26, 2008

Well I guess I should start this out with a bit of background info on the house I used to live in. The house was located on 805 Annett Road just north of Bothwell, Ontario. It was built in the early 1800′s by a couple who didn’t have much money and no children. Through their lives they used the house and it’s cellar below it to hide black and native American slaves.

When the couple was in their 60′s they met the misfortune of an angry farmer who’s slaves were using their cellar to hide. He and his men came one night and killed everyone on the property. When the couple’s son was notified their last wishes were read and they wished to be buried beneath the house that had taken them so many years to complete. A cross was carved into the support beam directly above their grave.

Their son sold the house afterward and stored all the blueprints and slave records in the attic. The man who bought the house moved in and he was found dead in the kitchen three days later with no blood in his body, no blood around him and no wounds to bleed from.

After that the house remained empty for about 50 years until a young couple moved into it, they had a young daughter of four. They lived peacefully for about six months and then the husband started acting very strange, very violent. His wife’s diary contained much information about these happenings but I was never able to get my hands on it. People say his spirit was drawn to it. His wife tried to flee with the child and he murdered them both. He too was then found with no blood in his body. Before his death he had scribbled a bunch of gibberish about the man with the mask and a white dog and that his wife and daughter were demons and they had to be killed. When he was found laying in the blood of his wife and child the house was boarded up and no one ever went near it. The bodies of his wife and child were taken and buried but his was left where it was found. This was in 1868.

Around 1902 a brave traveler was seeking to buy some property in the area and decided on the house despite what he was told about it. When all the proceedings were done he found some willing men and paid them to help him open the place and clean it up. A strange thing was that when the house was opened it smelled like women’s perfume inside (a smell that was often there when I lived there as well) and in the kitchen where the murders had taken place and where the dust and bones of his body should have been in the black stain of blood, there was nothing. The inside of the house was amazingly clean. There was only some minor work that needed to be done to the house before he could live in it (roof, windows… stuff like that) but the interior was completely intact.

He also added an addition to the back of the house. He lived in the house until his death in 1941 when records say he died of a very severe flu. Strange thing was that in the last few days of his life, his blood slowly started to lessen until there wasn’t enough left to sustain him any longer.

After that it was discovered that the house was actually on the property of the Annett family so the deed was turned over to them because the bank didn’t want to handle it any longer. The Annett family lived in the house until they had built a bigger grander house a few roads over and they too experienced several strange happenings and were very glad to move.

Then next person to live in the house was in 1987 and he seemed fine living in the house. There was no strange occurrences or anything. After about two years he put a new window in the back of the house so he could keep an eye on the barn in the back where he had a couple of cows. Approximately a week after he completed the renovation he was found hanging in the tree in the back yard and the cows were found beneath him on the ground… with no blood.

The next people to live in the house left about six months before we moved in. They had been there for about three years. A man and his wife and three children. They were not kind to the house when they lived in it and the toll of the place was too much for them to bare. The man started to act out violently and no one knows for sure what happened but his wife and one of the children disappeared. He was put into an institution where as far as anyone knows he still resides and the two remaining children went into foster care.

Then myself and my family moved in. We fixed up the place and made it presentable and for about two months there was nothing going on. When people around the area found out where we were living they didn’t want to associate with us. When I started hearing things I did some investigating and found an old man who was willing to give me some information. By this time strange things had started to happen but it was the usual typical haunting stuff like flickering lights and foot steps at night. I started to investigate around the house and under it until I found where the couple was buried. I took a picture of it to prove it.

I found the documents in the attic and pin pointed on the blue print where the couple was buried, right directly below my bed. I had been having strange dreams so I decided to move my bed to the other side of the room to see if that would change anything, it did! but not for the better. I started having dreams of blood and death. Knives and cutting and bloody splattering on walls but the person doing it was always a shadowed face. These dreams never bothered me until one night I saw the face, mine.

After that I made my investigations more in depth and more intense things started happening. A girl with a mutilated face kept asking me for help and it took me a while but I finally figured it out. Her ghost was focused around her murder weapon which was left when the farmer was done with his slaughter of the couple and the escaped slaves, a hunting knife that was also in the attic.

She also showed me the location of a box of jewelry and gold coins hidden in the floor behind a fake wall at the back of my closet. After I found it I kept in on my dresser and violent outbursts started happening in my family so I used a candle circle to quarantine it and then buried it out in the forest area at the back of the property and everything went quiet again.

Every once in a while I saw glimpses of the man hanging in the tree, but he wasn’t dead, he was laughing hysterically. I saw the old couple who built the house and they were always happy but there was something much worse around the house. It has an aura about it that even on a bright sunny afternoon with a yard full of flowers it looks cursed and depressed.

I left the house the way it was when I realized that I was the one that had those spirits riled up. I put everything back where I had found it and destroyed all my notes and moved away and for about three years after I had a shadow follow me everywhere. I haven’t been the same since I lived there.

It’s worth a visit if you have time and money but I wouldn’t recommend doing too much exploration, nothing around there takes kindly to invasion or change.

Usually I get a freaky feeling about stories, something about your story seems untrue. Idk why, I’m sorry to say that. Please don’t get angry, it’s just a vibe.

  4. Jackie says:

I hope you are not making it up as i think it is very important for people to know the truth about such things – extremely important!!!

  5. Jackie says:

I lived on Annett Rd since I was 5 until I was 19 years old, and not once has there been anything said of murders or ghosts. If I am correct, I have even been inside that house visiting with the people who lived there. They had been there for a couple of years and never once did they mention anything strange happening to them either. Really wish this was a true story, it would be great for our small town and it’s history.

  11. Pat says:

Hmmmm…. was a great tale… I thought it was true…yes I thought once slaves made it to the north in America they were safe too….

  12. Beth says:

I found this most interesting right from the start. Paragraph one states the couple had no children. Paragraph two goes on to say… “when they couple’s son was notified”. So which is it… children or not? That is just one of the contradictions I saw right off the hop. You can’t have it both ways. Perhaps this son was the ghost son they never had LOL
