Death Anniversary

Posted on October 18, 2011

This happened around the month of June 2006 when I was 18. Previously we squat at my aunts lot owned by my fathers elder sister. Since they will be building an apartment on the said lot we were forced to move at my other aunts lot (eldest sister of my father).
We occupied the vacant space before my uncles house which is also situated on that lot. My uncle (father’s younger brother) who owns the house died in June 2003 at the age of 40 due to diabetes, tuberculosis and other complications.

When we decided to move on my aunts lot,a few months later the family who rents my uncles house moved to a different place where they now stayed for good.

Since our house was too small for us, my father decided that we’ll just make use of my deceased uncle’s house as our house. My uncles house became our main residence while our house was made as my and my brothers sleeping quarters.

Nothing happens to my uncle’s house but to our sleeping quarters there was. My brother as he wakes up makes sure that he fixes his beddings before going out of his room. No one touches his things and even sleeps in his bed because he was very strict of his belongings and his stuffs. One’s he gets up and fixes his things in that position he makes sure that every time he gets back from school it should still be in that position.

When he fixes his beddings the pillows are placed at the place where the beds head is also situated. The bed is in a vertical position where the the beds head is facing south and the feet side is the the north point. One day when he got home he saw that his pillows where moved at the feet side which is in the original south and placed to north. At first he didn’t mind it at all thinking maybe one of my younger brothers slept or played into his room. Days passed by and he just kept his temper for he knew no one would touch his stuffs except my younger brothers or maybe my mom who may have decided to clean his room ones in a while.

There were also instances that I cant literally mean to forget where I put some of my things but it seems like it would disappear on the place where I originally put them and later part will saw it on a different area where it was not placed before. Sometimes I would think I have an amnesia or a short term memory. But I would still wonder why would it happen every now and then.

One night he asked why is it that for almost a week when he fixes his beddings and puts the pillow on the head part of the bed it appears as someone has moved it as the pillow where at the feet side of the bed or placed at north side. When my brother asked us who keeps on moving his pillow at feet side of his bed no one answered. he also asked my mom if she had moved it when she cleaned his room last time but my mom said she didn’t.

I cracked a joke when I said, ” hala mo basi si tito na kag dira siya natulog sa kama mo?” (“Hmmmm maybe it was uncle who moved it and slept in your bed?”) everyone was kept in silence when I cracked the joke!! Just then that we realized that it was my uncles death anniversary a week ago and we haven’t paid him a visit in the cemetery. I smiled a little but took a glimpse of my brothers room for awhile. I felt that someone was with us that night and nevertheless it would be my uncle who died before.

When he was still alive my brother and I always bring him his food because he was already bedridden. He was very thin and couldn’t even control some of his body reflexes. He was transferred to my lola’s house (lola is grandmother) at the later part so that someone could watch for him more often since our old house was situated far apart from his house. One day he was seen lifeless by one of the neighbor’s who watches him often.

That night instead of the creeps which should surround me because of what happened I felt sadness because I remembered my uncle and what happened to him. The next day my dad paid him a visit in his tomb and that night I prayed for his soul to be with God in heaven.

Maybe what happened was just his way of letting us remember him and that after his death he was still with us or in his place for quiet sometime. After that, my brothers pillow wasn’t moved to the reversed side anymore and every time I misplaced things I’m now sure that that I really tend to forget it but already happens seldom (not as often as before).

By the way when my uncle was still living in our place his bed was also in a vertical position and I always saw him sleeping with his head at the north side of the bed and his feet at the south side. He is in a reverse position as my brother is.
