What is a Pentacle?

Pentacle

Pentacle

A friend of mine came in to school and I noticed a new pendant she was wearing. I asked her to let me see it but she just covered it up. I didnt see exactly what it was at that time but later I saw her again and the pendant was where I could see it and I was shocked. It was a pentacle. The reason I was shocked was because I thought it was a devil worshipers symbol and that my friend must have fallen in with some creepy cult.

She told me it was nothing to do with anything evil or the devil but I just can’t believe her.

What is the truth about a pentacle? What does a pentacle mean or represent? Has my family taught me wrong all my life or is this girl telling lies?

  1. I know quite some about the Wiccan religion, when I saw that photo I understood it. Don’t doubt her, and don’t believe she’s a devil worshipper. I’m not trying to choose a side. When you ask her about it, be interested about what it means, not worried or scared.

  2. If the feet are facing up, it’s Satanic, if they are facing down, it’s an ancient symbol of protection most commonly associated with witches and Wicca.

    • In Christianity the pentagram is also used – it’s a symbol of the 5 senses. It’s not widely used today, but Christians have used it for ages all the same.

In Paganism, this holy symbol is not evil. It represents the elements and offers protection.

Also, it’s never been meant to be evil. Rather, people have twisted it to be such. An upside down cross; after all, is thought of as evil. But truly, is it? I think not. I think it’s a perversion vs. reality.

  3. The pentacle means different things to different people. It’s a common misconception that it’s Satanic in nature (although Satanists have adopted the inverse version as a symbol though it’s not truly satanic unless it’s baphomet which has a goat’s head drawn into the symbol) because Wicca has no conception of Satan whatsoever.

Generally, it’s a protective symbol, and one common interpretation is of the five elements (earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, all joined together with a circle) but like I said, each person has a different interpretation so if you’re truly curious, ask her what it represents to her.

If you’re wondering why she’s going through the trouble to hide it, it’s because of the common misinterpretations that other religions hold over the symbol and the Wiccan religion. Especially if she’s new to the religion (and it’s possible that it may just be a phase as well, because I’ve noticed that some teenagers turn to Wicca to “rebel”) she may not be comfortable expressing her new-found beliefs because of the “presecution” she may recieve from her peers.

So the important thing to do is to support her rather than preach to her, and try to understand what Wicca is about. I guarantee, it’s more harmless that you might think.

  4. Pentagrams have been used in a variety of different religions…they do not necessarily mean anything Satanic, unless as stated by spoony monster, there is the goatshead in it. In certain Wiccan sects it is the symbol for the Goddess.
Superstition and an ignorance of religious paraphenalia lead to people assuming everything is Satanic.
Your friend is probably just scared that people will judge her by those standards.

  5. If has not spoken incorrectly, that five pointed star is possibly some kind of cults thing. But as far as I know, the blood suck ghost mark is also a five pointed star. Therefore your friend is possibly two one.

  6. I agree with Soony Monster on the pentecale and the elements. Now one of the descriptions that i heard is that both represent a path of energy gained from both symbols gaining their energy from air, earth, water, fire and soul (the soul point of the star is the point facing up or down on the star) now if the star is facing down it gets its energy from hell. However if the point is facing up its powers come from heaven (difference between light and dark magic). Another description of the pentagram is used as a map of the soul. All the elements (and the spirit) make up the composition of the soul. Although most of the time its just a symbol of someones religion. If the point is facing down a satanist if not a wiccan.
