Our First Ghost Experience

Posted on August 4, 2010

My twin and I are very thankful that we only had one ghost experience. And here it is:

We were nine years old at the time and had just moved to Texas. Our parents bought our first new house with a pool. We all were very excited and happy and couldn’t wait to settle in. But as the first months went by, we had frequent visits by police who always had questions about the house and I once heard them asking my father if he ever found anything out of the ordinary in the house. When we asked our dad what they had talked about he said it was nothing. It wasn’t until years later when we moved back to New York that he would tell us what that was all about.

My sister was the first one to notice something was strange about the house:

One hot summer my mom was busy cooking with my aunt inside the house – I was cleaning out the pool by myself, since I had recently invited a friend over the other day. I made sure not lean out too far out as I picked out the leaves with the pole cleaner thing but I didn’t worry much since I knew how to swim. All of a sudden I felt a sharp slap on my back that took the air out of me! I fell into the pool so shocked that I started gulping in the water. In that moment of unknown terror I somehow forgot how to swim and how to float.

Moments later I felt someone pull me out of the water and as I reached the surface I realized my mom had jumped in to save me, clothes and all. “Someone pushed me” I told her crying. She didn’t believe me of course. I was by myself, no one was with me. “You probably slipped” she said. But I knew the real ghost truth.

I don’t remember if it was the same night or not but I slept in the top bunk in the room me and my sister share. One night as I was sleeping I awoke so suddenly and what I saw petrified me so much that to this day I have refused to sleep on a top bunk bed again! A ghostly white hand appeared from the wall beside me and started reaching for my throat. I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out so I immediately threw myself out of the bed wanting to get away. I forgot at that moment I was on the top bunk and so I fell. I hit my shoulder with the wooden dresser at the bottom. The noise of my fall woke everyone. I couldn’t form the words to say what happened all I could do was shake continuously in my moms arms.

So the next morning I asked my sister what had happened that made her fall out of the bed. When she told me about the ghostly white hand, I laughed and didn’t believe her. I told her she was probably dreaming.

“Yeah, that’s what mom said,” she said sadly and started crying. I felt bad and told her I would sleep in the top bunk from now on. That cheered her up and I didn’t think anymore about the situation. Until that night that is.

Now the room I shared with my sister was small and it had no windows. It got pitch black at night, except for the light that streamed from the bottom of the door from the hallway light.

I was happily snoring the night away when the icy cold air woke me up. Now my mom always told us to fold a warm blanked and lay it at our feet in case we got cold. I remembered that and groggily got up to pull it up, when as I was reaching for the blanket, a white, almost transparent hand began to slowly come out from the wall, almost as if reaching for the blanket at my feet too. Whatever it was doing, I gasped and shut my eyes. I quickly pulled the blanket over my head and started to cry. I must’ve cried myself to sleep because that is all I remember. I told my parent the next day but with the same answer as always.

Now it wasn’t until we were 14 and living in New York again that our parents brought up the conversation during a family reunion on Christmas. When I told them “Remember that first house you and mom bought? When we thought we were seeing a white hand?” I laughed at how big our imagination was when my dad said, “Actually that house WAS really haunted. Your mother and I didn’t want to tell you because we didn’t want to scare yall.”

My sister and I were speechless. As he went on, our dad said that the police who kept coming over and asking him questions were the ones that told him about the recent history of the house (which was the reason why the house was put on sale so low a price but no one bought it).

The reason being because two men were killed in the attic.

And that wasn’t even the most surprising of it all. It turns out that the guy my parents rented the extra room to had also told our parents about a ghost experience he had one night. And here is what my dad told us he had said:

One night (lets call him “Oscar” cause I don’t remember his name)Oscar got up to get a drink. He didn’t even bother to turn on the lights since he slept next to the study room that had glass sliding doors leading outside to the pool so he had plenty of moonlight lighting his way. He said that once he got his drink and was closing the refrigerator door, he saw a shadow a few feet away that quickly turned around and slipped into the utility room (which he mentioned later was open, when it wasn’t supposed to be.)He jumped but then chuckled thinking it was my dad who was trying to scare him. He said he called out and said “I saw you! Don’t try to scare me!” And he followed the figure into the garage when he heard that the door leading to the garage creaked. When he saw the shadow hide behind the van he clicked the lights on saying,”HaHa!” But received the most shocking fright when he saw the garage was empty.
