I have been working as a mental health professional for about 10 years. I had a unique experience with an elderly gentleman that I was asked to provide grief counseling that has cemented in my mind, that after we pass from this life we are not completely gone. This happened about a year ago.
The man, in his 80′s, had presented to his doctor crying uncontrollably explaining that his wife of 60 years had passed away a month before and he was having a terrible time coping with her passing. As you can imagine this gentleman was very distraught by the time he made it to my office. He was crying so hard that by the time he left my office an entire box of Kleenex was gone. We talked for nearly an hour and a half as he chronicled the day they met until her final moments. He produced a photo, taken sometime around WWII of a beautiful smiling young woman, and described the wonderful relationship they had shared. I felt as if I knew this woman.
At one unfortunate point he began talking about her illness and the suffering she had gone through before passing a few months later. He leaned over in the chair and put his face in his hands, crying uncontrollably. It was at this moment that out of the corner of my eye I saw a basketball-sized gyrating ball of light floating about 5 feet off the ground in the corner. I slowly turned towards the light and watched in amazement as it continued to gyrate. It was a bright white light, as if staring directly into a bare light bulb only much bigger.
The man was still bent over with his face in his hands; he clearly did not notice what I was seeing. I debated: should I ask him if he was seeing what I was seeing and risk that he did not, and tell all of my colleagues I was completely loony tunes? Would he see it too, and find great comfort that she was still with him? I believed this to be his recently departed wife, still trying to comfort her husband. I chose not to say anything, hoping that he would sit up and see for himself. Unfortunately, after a minute or so the giant ball of light disappeared, and the did not see it.
After the session was over the man thanked me, and said that he felt much better. I debated for several days if I should call the man and mention the strange, but comforting experience. But in the end I decided it could do more damage than good. I wondered if he had ever seen it himself, but had the same fears of being told he was “loony” too.
For a few days after the experience, I would see small streaks of white light shoot through my office, but this eventually stopped. I have never had an experience like this before, or since.
