Trying to Contact the Dead

Posted on January 22, 2010

I am the sort of person that doesn’t just believe everything I hear. I have to actually see or witness something for it to be real for me. Example:  spirits, ghosts etc.

One of my best mates was an extremely high believer of the after life. Every time I would stay over at her house she would always say, “I want to contact the spirit that’s in my house.” I asked her what on earth was she talking about. She went on about how late at night when everyone would be asleep and all the lights were out she would hear slow moving footsteps walking past her door and the creaking of her hallway floors whilst hearing a sound of an old lady humming. It was funny as all the times I had stayed there I never heard a peep. She said that was because I was never listening and that I was always asleep as was the rest of her family but I explained to her that she couldn’t just assume certain things considering there were five other people living in her house at that point in time and it could just be her parents/brothers or sister going to the toilet or the kitchen!

“Yeah, but there are no elderly women living here and when I would have the guts to get up and look outside my door, I would check on everyone and they would always be sound asleep without a fail,” she told me firmly. Of course I did not believe her one bit. I would always laugh at her and tell her to start living in the real world and that I didn’t want any part of it because its a complete waste of time. Well that was when we were about 12 years old. We lost contact for a fair while and after about two years of hardly speaking, we started talking and hanging out again as we did not want to lose our friendship. I ended up staying at her house for about three weeks as there was a fair bit of catching up to do.

It was around midnight the very first night I stayed there and we were chatting and having a good old laugh looking back on all our great memories. When all of a sudden we both heard the humming of the old lady that my friend Mell use to always talk about. I just froze in silence and was trying very hard to listen to every noise and movement that sounded like it was going on just outside of Mell’s door and that definitely did not sound like anyone who was living at her house. The humming would get louder and louder then slowly drift off as did the creaking of the floors and the footsteps. It was like somebody was just pacing up and down the hallway. Mell and I were just wide eyed staring at each other in such shock. Then Mell whispered, “I told you so.”

We both quickly jumped up and ran to her bedroom door and held our ears tightly up next to it. Nothing! We opened the door in such hesitation and bolted up the dark, cold hallway and flicked every light on in the house. We couldn’t hear nor see anything but it was freezing and I had the worst feeling ever of someone’s presence of being right near us. The thought of it gave me goose bumps so we leaped back into Mell”s room not looking back and slammed the door behind us. The door slamming woke Mell’s mum up and she rushed into the room to find out what all the noise was about. We explained everything to her and she just laughed and went on with how it was more than likely Mell’s little brother wondering around. Nope! that was defiantly not him!

That night after a lot of tossing and turning trying to go to sleep, we finally did! At around 3 am I awoke to Mell screaming hysterically. I jumped up as fast as I could and asked her what was wrong. She threw herself out of bed and yelled to me that she woke up because she could feel movement on her face and hair. Then when she opened her eyes, there was a figure standing over her and running fingers threw Mell’s hair and patting her face whispering things that she couldn’t understand and doing that same humming sound that we heard a few hours before hand. Mell’s scream must of frightened whatever or whoever it was because when I woke up there was nothing there. However there was that freezing cold feeling again and it was boiling hot just before we went to bed as it was in the middle of summer. We tried to fall back to sleep but there was no point so we just stayed up and talked. We didn’t bother telling Mell’s parents about the event as Mell knew that there was no way that they would believe her and she didn’t want to be considered as crazy. Although I never saw anything, to see how scared Mell was said it all, she looked like she had literately seen a ghost.

The next night we were staying up late and sitting on the computer when we heard a door slam. We jumped in fright and ran to the door, nothing was there and nobody was awake. Mell explained to me that she couldn’t sleep in that room another night knowing that somebody or something could just touch her when she was sleeping, she had enough of it and nobody believing her. She told me the two years that we hadn’t spoken much had just gotten worse.

The next day we went out shopping and she had her heart set on buying one important item, a Ouija board! Later on that night her parents and siblings went to bed and we were the only ones up. As soon as Mell knew everybody was asleep she begged and begged me to try the Ouija board out  as she needed to know who this spirit was once and for all. I finally agreed after hearing what I heard that other night. So we got everything set up and had candles and all the bits and pieces surrounding us in the lounge room. I felt a bit silly for what I was about to do as I had never really done it before and didn’t know what to expect, and yes I will admit, I was scared and nervous. I never thought I’d ever believe in ghosts. After me giving Mell the thumbs up that I was ready, we started reading the instructions. There was all about what to do if we were to contact a bad spirit instead of good and I was freaked out wondering if the spirit in Mell’s house was a bad one. But it hadn’t harmed anyone and Mell said all the out of the ordinary things happened two and a half years ago so it couldn’t of been there to harm anyone because we were sure if it wanted to, it would of by now. Anyway so we knew what to do, just had to get started. I had the giggles for a while because it felt strange to do what we were doing but Mell told me to please be serious. Well if a spirit was hanging around my house, I would want to be serious too.

I started concentrating and we closed our eyes. Mell was telling me to be open minded so we could let the spirits come to the board, she was doing majority of the talking. After a fair few minutes of nothing but silence we were almost about to give up. You could see the disappointment on Mell’s face when all of a sudden we heard yet again, footsteps! It sounded like they were coming from the kitchen, and they sounded like slippers or something dragging along the tiled kitchen floor. It was like when people don’t pick up their feet properly when there walking. We turned towards the kitchen but still saw nothing. The footsteps didn’t stop. They were getting louder and sounded like they were getting closer. Mell turned back around and whispered, “close your eyes.” At this point in time that was the last thing I wanted to do as I did not want to miss something happening. Mell repeated herself so I hesitantly did what she wanted me to do.

The footsteps stopped for a second then there was this sound of olden day music, very slow and calming. It was like the next door neighbours were playing but it was after midnight and Mell looked out the window and it was pitch black, no lights were on in the street what so ever and outside was completely still and quiet. We sat back down to see what else would happen even though I wasn’t sure if I wanted anything else to happen. The music was getting louder and than the humming began. The humming was to the tune of the old style music we could hear and it was like only Mell and I could hear it slightly. I looked down and I could see the hairs on my skin standing up straight in the air and nothing but goose bumps all over my skin. The humming got closer and closer to the point where the spirit had to of been in the lounge room. The music came to a stop and than I jumped to Mell screaming. I thought she saw something but she was just staring at me with fear. “What happened?” I asked her confused. She told me that she took a peek and when she looked at me my eyes were rolling in the back of my head and all that she could see were bright, wide eyes. I didn’t understand why that would happen and it was so strange considering I thought I had my eyes completely closed the whole time.

We started again with the board and then I got this excruciating pain all through my back and it got to the point where I had to stop and lay on the floor, I was almost in tears it was that bad. Then it just stopped like it never happened. We were so confused. Why were all these strange things happening to me? We decided to keep going, we couldn’t turn back now. Mell started mumbling, “who are you? what is your name?” over and over again. I was so freaked out but I joined in anyway. We asked the same question louder and louder each time we chanted. Then all we heard was a loud bang, like something fell. We noticed a picture had been knocked off the wall. We turned it over and I asked Mell who it was. She explained that it was a picture of her grandmother that had passed away three years ago. We couldn’t put our heads around it all and couldn’t figure what was going on. Nothing much more happened after that so we decided to end it and call it a night.

The following morning Mell decided to sit down and talk to her mum about the situation. We explained everything and all the strange things that had taken place last night.  Mell’s mum just stared at us with shock written all over her face. She said that Mell’s grandmother died of back cancer three years ago. Mell told us that’s when the feeling of being haunted all started; three years ago. Then I remembered the back pain I had. I told  Mell’s mum about it, she said that  Mell’s grandmother (Eva) would constantly complain about her back towards the end of her cancer battle. What about the humming and strange sounding footsteps all the time? I asked Mell’s mum. Apparently Eva would always be getting around in slippers and always had music playing around the home constantly, even when she was sleeping. It relaxed her and she would always just walk around the house humming all day long. Well that explains majority of the situation, I thought to myself. What about the figure standing over me patting my hair through the night? Mell asked her mum. Mell’s mums eyes started tearing up, she explained to us that when Mell was very young it was very difficult to get her to sleep but when Eva ( Mell’s grandmother) would come over, she would brush her fingers lightly through Mell’s hair and pat her forehead, within seconds Mell would drift off to sleep. Mell’s mums expressions on her face showed belief of what had happened now that she heard everything and as it was her mother. She was very sensitive to the situation. Mell and I felt very much at ease as well.

We are both 18 years old now. Mell moved a fair while away but we sill keep in contact very much. Still to this day, Mell often says that she still hears footsteps of slippers being dragged along the carpet and humming, even the music that we heard that night now and than, she feels her grandmother shall follow them wherever they go. We may not have seen her to know it was her but when you add everything up and connect it all together, it just had to of been Eva. Mell tries to talk to her and ask her why she has not crossed over but there has never been a reply, yet. Just humming to her favourite tunes. We hope that she feels no pain now and although she may not have crossed over yet, hopefully she is at rest and in peace somehow.

I still question myself about believing in the supernatural and all the above now and then but then I think back to that night, and I don’t know why I would question it. That is certainly a time in my life that I shall never forget and I am actually grateful to have experienced it all. When you look back on the story, the end turns out to be a beautiful thing. Hope you find this story interesting, it is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
