The Thing in My Room

Posted on August 25, 2010

When I was about thirteen years old my beloved great Grandma died and my parents inherited her home. My Gran was a beautiful lady, one of the most loving and gentle souls you could ever hope to meet. My parents decided that we would all move into Grans house as it was such a happy place for us all and was so full of happy memories.

Everything was fine for about a year but when my youngest brother was on the way, alterations had to be made to the house to accommodate our growing family, this is when it all began.

It started with an uneasy feeling, when I was in bed at night I felt as though someone was watching me. After a while I started to see a dark shadow stood in the doorway to my room. Every time I saw it I was filled with a feeling of dread and I was so afraid I would pull the covers over my head.

I told my Mum about it and she did some experiments with the lights in the house and the position of my bedroom curtains to see if she could recreate what I was seeing, but she couldn’t. No one else in my family except me and my six year old brother saw it, so I think at first my Mum thought I was imagining things and telling my Little brother about it and He was buying into my hysteria.

One day My Mum was decorating the bathroom which faced my bedroom. She said that she got a bad feeling and then something that she couldn’t see growled in her ear. She could feel its breath on her neck and it stank. My Mother is not easily intimidated and said, “So your the piece of filth that’s been terrorizing my child are you. Get out of my house, you’re not welcome here”. It growled even louder and closer to her; but my Mum just got more annoyed, told it what a pathetic bully she thought it was and told it to get out.
For about three weeks it didn’t come back, but when it did things got much worse. It started to taunt me by calling out my name and then laughing at me, it would lean right over my bed. That laughter I will never forget for as long as I live, it chilled me to my soul. The more it did this the more afraid I became. One night it tried to strangle me, I fought it off with everything that I had in me, I have never been so terrified in all my life. I ran screaming from the room.

My Mum was running up the hallway, she went into my room and told it to get the hell out of our home. It started banging on the walls. It was very fast, as if it was going at speed but banging on every wall and door that it passed, the doors rattled on their hinges with the force of it.

I wouldn’t sleep in my room, and I was so scared that my Mum slept downstairs with me. It would flash images of evil and scary faces in my mind, I later learned that it was doing that to my Mum and Dad. In the end I couldn’t have a bath alone as it would always be there, night and day grabbing for me shouting me and laughing that evil laugh.

My Mum said that it had to stop and I had to fight my fear, it got weaker when my Mum  was around and stronger if it could corner me on my own. I fought my fear, I ignored it, I told it to get lost. I bit down really hard on my fear. It still tried to get to me but the more I didn’t give in to feeling afraid the less it seemed to be able to interact with me. The last few times I saw it, it was just hanging around the bathroom and my bedroom door. I could feel it getting weaker, until eventually it just wasn’t there any more.

I just wanted to share my experience with any parents who might come to this site because if your children are telling you unbelievable things, Listen to them and believe them. If My Mum hadn’t been so supportive and empowering I dread to think how this terrible experience would have ended.
