I was only 10 or 11 at the time my great uncle Ray died. Two weeks later my great grandpas got very sick (both of them). My grandpa Charlie (my grandma’s dad) was the sickest which was my uncle Rays brother. He had lung cancer (from smoking). He got so sick we decided to put him in the nursing home.

Three days later we discovered that my other grandpa had stomach cancer and we had to decide if we wanted to put him in a nursing home too. This time we asked our grandpa if it’s okay to put him in a nursing home. He said if he can be next to my other grandpa. So they were next to each other.The nurses reported that my great grandpa was doing really good and he only had two or three weeks to stay there until he could go home.

Two weeks later my great grandpa Charlie was really bad and the nurses said he only had a couple of days to live. We told my other grandfather what the nurses had told us, he was really sad about it and wouldn’t talk or eat. He went into this coma or something like that. That day my other grandfather died and we never told my grandfather about it.

Me and my cousin went downstairs to cool off. While we were down there I heard something. My cousin said, “if you are there grandpa please show us your here”. After ten minutes nothing happened so we went back up stairs and when it was time to go my cousin wanted to sleep over  my house. All my cousins stayed over that night. About 12:30 am my cousin had to go to the bathroom (to get to the bathroom you have to go through the living room). When we were going through the room something told me to look on the right side, when I did I saw my grandpa sitting there on the sofa smoking and his lips were moving. Then the phone rang, my mom picked it up and about five minutes later I heard her crying, then I looked back and he was gone. My mom came out and said your Nano (great grandpa) has died, (maybe that’s what my grandpa had said).

That year my uncle got sicker and sicker day by day. We were scared that he would die (my cousins and me the most). We all found that he had liver cancer. Three months went by and he could hardly move and his body turned yellow and that night the whole family stayed at the house where my uncle stayed. About 9:35 pm my uncle was jumping around and laughing like if he was a kid. He wanted his sister to play games like when they where kids again. Then I went upstairs to go to bed and when me and my grandpas (Charlie) movie came on I looked up and saw him and he mumbled, “let him go with me and let me go,” then he started to fade away slowly, but when he was going he said, “I think I love you”.

The next day when I walked by my uncle to go to school he said, “come over here,” so I did and he said, “did you have a good visit?” and I knew that he knew. All I said was,”I did and I will.” He looked at me with that face he makes when he’s hurting and doesn’t want to show it.

That same day I felt sick all day and I kept hearing my name being called in school, but no one in school knew this name. I kept hearing (only my grandpa knew it) the name Potato Head. I heard on the speaker my name being called. I knew what it was. I went down stairs to the office and saw my mom’s and cousin’s face. All I said was, “he died didn’t he?”    

After that I never saw them again, but I have dreams about them. To people who have lost loved ones, my thoughts for you is just let them go and you will see them again when they are ready.
