My First Paranormal Experience Calumet Park Illinois

Posted on November 2, 2010

I can still remember it like yesterday! Our family had just moved into a house in Calumet Park, Illinois. The previous owner was an old Caucasian woman. It was said she passed away in the house. Well, we were the first to move in after the house made the market. Our first night there was the beginning of multiple paranormal experiences for me. It was 1989 and I was 9 years old.

As most families, we were exhausted from the move so we didn’t put any beds together. There were two bedrooms upstairs. The biggest was my sisters’ room and the other belonged to me and my brother. My oldest sisters slept on a queen size mattress in the living room that night. My other two sisters, my brother and myself slept on mattresses in our room. Well before we went to sleep or should I say decided to, we were just playing around and laughing all night. In the midst of our playing we (my brother, myself, and the two youngest of my sisters) all heard whispering coming from the room across the hall. We stopped playing to listen but the whispering stopped as soon as we got quiet. We went ahead playing thinking we must have heard our sisters in the living room.

A few moments later we heard the stairs creaking and we all paused again. My brother called out our oldest sisters names thinking it may be one of them. At that moment, the whispering started again. We couldn’t make out any words, just the sound of quiet speaking mixed with whistling sounds your mouth makes when you whisper. All of a sudden the whispering got closer, not necessarily louder just closer as if who or whatever was making the noise came from across the hall right into the room with us. We all freaked out and went into panic mode. I jumped into one of the beds and under the covers. But all of my siblings who were there, ran out of the room and downstairs. When they left, whispering seemed to circle me as if I was being taunted by this entity. I could also hear what sounded like the chanting of banshees. I instantly started crying. I cried myself to sleep that night.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of cartoons. My siblings came back upstairs with a 13″ TV that Mom said they could watch until they went to sleep. I was so upset with them for leaving me. Now you may have asked yourself, why I mentioned the previous owner, her ethnicity, and her death. Well rumor was she never wanted a family of a minority ethnicity to live there. My family is African-American. Well the rumor wasn’t at all true. My grandmother dreamt of an old Caucasian woman who told her, she never thought a family with a lot a children could keep the house up. She told my grandmother she was happy we were the family in the house. Our neighbor said my grandmothers description of the woman was that of the homes previous owner.

This was only the first of many experiences in this house. I still don’t know if it was the woman that died there that we heard, but I know she wasn’t the entity of later experiences. This house is in Calumet Park, Illinois on May Street. It is the second house from the Cedar Park Cemetery in which the old woman was buried. After we left that house, no other family lived there as long as us. We were there 5 years.

I drove past the house some time ago, couple of years or so. It was then and is still to this day, abandoned!
