Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

Friday December 11th was the 23rd anniversary of my father’s death. Today, the 15th, was his birthday. Four strange occurrences have taken place in the time since he died, including two on the night he died and the last one to date taking place two years ago. I’ll start with the night he died.

On December 11th 1986 my father and three of his friends were out driving. That night, my Uncle woke up from a dream in which all he saw was a train crash into a car. He sat up in bed and looked at the clock: 1:26 AM. He found out in the morning that that was the exact moment my father’s car was hit by a train. No one had been drinking, no one did any drugs, it was simply a wrong place/wrong time situation.

While in the hospital, my father’s friend Walt was receiving treatment for injuries he’d sustained in the crash. The whole time he sat there thinking he was going to die he saw my father watching him from the chair beside his bed. Walt found out later that night that my father had been killed instantly in the crash and he now believes it was really my father’s spirit waiting to see if Walt would die so they could go together. I wouldn’t believe any of this if not for what happened to my mother and me one night years later.

As a child, I often climbed into my mother’s bed and slept with her. One night I woke up with the feeling of someone watching me. I sat up in bed and my father was sitting at the end of it. I could see right through him, but where he sat there was an indentation in the bed. Not believing my eyes, I woke my mother up. She sat up and I pointed to where my father still sat. We sat there in silence for a while until he stood up, waved, and faded into nothing. I’ve asked my mother on numerous occasions since that night if I really saw him and every time she says “yes, and I saw him too”.

Two years ago my father’s youngest brother was choking on a shrimp. He survived the choking only to suffer a brain aneurysm and die later that night. At the funeral a few days later my cousin pulled me aside and said, “You’re going to think I’m crazy, but at the viewing last night I saw Uncle Dutch (my dad) walking by the casket.” I told him I didn’t think he was crazy because I’d seen him myself all those years ago. The irony of this is that I am still somewhat skeptical when I hear others saying they’ve seen ghosts!

My father is not the only encounter I’ve had with supernatural/paranormal beings, but I’ll post the others apart from this. I must admit that sometimes when I’m alone I silently ask my father to please be at my wedding. He can’t be there to walk me down the aisle, but I desperately want him to reveal himself to me again.
