About two years ago I had what I consider the most terrifying experience of my whole life.
I went on a trip to Costa Rica with my school over the summer for a few weeks. For about three days we stayed at this place called the Cloud Forest Lodge about four hours from San Jose (the main city, if you don’t know). It was in the mountain range and there wasn’t anything around for miles.
When we first got there I started kidding around with the owner about ghosts and I remember he said, “No not where you all are staying, the higher lodges are the haunted ones.” Each little lodge was a house. And we all had one and shared with another person, we were on the lower lodges but could see the upper lodges from my lodge.
I was with my friend Wendy and we unpacked and got settled. The day went on and soon night came. There was just one big bed so we shared it. I couldn’t fall asleep for about three hours so I was just laying there (I don’t do well sleeping in new places) and at about midnight I started to clearly hear a flute outside of our back door. I thought it was so bizarre but a girl on my trip had just bought a wooden flute and she played it all the time so I thought maybe it was her, and she wasn’t sleep either.
As the night went on the flute got louder, and there were many clear tunes I still can recall. I woke up Wendy because I got scared, and she didn’t hear it but said maybe it was a frog or something, so what’s out there in Costa Rica?
The second she laid back down and she fell asleep the flute started again. I shook her and said its still there. And it stopped when she woke up. She told me just to go to bed so I started to close my eyes and when I heard the flute I suddenly opened my eyes and I swear I saw the outline of a huge man in the corner with a hat on and a bandana around his neck. I started to breath so heavily and he came walking closer to me. I felt my whole body freeze and I could hear his heavy breathing.
The next thing I knew I was paralyzed, and he was hanging over my body. He reached his arm out and put it out, and pressed hard on my chest, pushing all the air out of my chest. I was choking, I couldn’t breath and I was trying to scream, “Wendy!” but I couldn’t get the words out. It took a few attempts but I screamed Wendy and she awoke and turned on the light. It was all over.
The next day I told the owner about my experience and he said he’s heard about the flute before, but only at the upper lodge and that maybe there was something about me that attracted it.
