Freaky Old Queenslander in Brisbane

Posted on April 12, 2011

About 2 years ago I was living by myself in an old Queenslander in Brisbane Australia with just my cat for company. I worked 2 jobs so I got home late every night and my friend who lived in the house behind mine asked me to come over most nights after work for a cuppa so she would know that I was safe. I never really felt anything creepy in my house but I would always hear footsteps running around my house late at night which at first I passed off as the neighbours kids next door being rowdy as that house was very close to mine. That was until my friends hot water system broke and she and her husband and 2 kids would come over to use my shower, and they both told me on separate occasions that when they were in my house alone they would hear running through the house and thought it was my cat until they checked on her and found her asleep every time.

After this my jug would turn on by itself after I would leave the kitchen but that stopped after I said that if it was going to touch my stuff it could do the dishes for me. I started getting freaked out in my yard because I had 2 sensor lights, one in the backyard and one on my front verandah that would come on late at night while I was watching TV and I would check and there would be nothing out there.

Also when I would go over to my friends house which was nearly every day I had to walk through my backyard to the fence which was just a normal chain-link fence so we cut it away from the post and rolled it up so we had a clear path into each others yards, I had quite a few trees in my yard so our path wasn’t straight it curved around and went under a few of the trees towards the fence so it was like walking through an archway (we always walked this way to avoid the spiders under the mango tree). It was always when one of us was walking near this archway that we would start to get freaked out because we would hear footsteps in the bushes around us and because I was always walking this path late at night I started taking a torch and a stick with me because when I would be coming home I would hear the footsteps start when I crossed the fence into my yard and they would follow me all the way to my back stairs. I even started taking the cat with me for company on the walk because I was so scared.

One night I was at my house with my now fiancé and my friend came running through my back door saying that as she passed under the archway she felt like someone was breathing on the back of her neck and I even had to get my fiancé to walk her home as she was so freaked out. We never saw anything in my yard, but we saw a dark figure walking through hers near our fence line, after that we stopped walking through the yard alone and I always left lights on at my house so we could see.

This continued on for months until my friend separated from her husband and her and the kids moved in with me, after that we had no reason to walk through the yard so it didn’t really bother us after that. It wasn’t the end of the strange happenings though, we would still hear the footsteps in the house and the sensor lights would always turn on, we would hear knocking on the front door in the middle of the night and things would go missing.

It was about this time that we noticed the painting in my bathroom, it was of the house but was obviously painted when the house was first built because the trees and the gate were a lot different to what they are now. I always thought I saw someone in the doorway of the painting but one day we looked at it and we counted about 14 different shadow people in the painting. Drops of blood appeared on the wooden floor outside my friends room and never went away and she even saw a face looking in her window one night and we found upside down handprints on the side of the house outside her window the next day.

All these things continued right up until the day we moved out and we both believe that they followed us to our next house because we had lots of strange incidents there as well…

what you have described sounds just like a poltergiest – it seems to have attached itself to your family. has any of your family members committed a sin recently or diturbed anything connected to the paranormal? well done for standing up to it (the jug). you should try and communicate with the poltergiest. this way you will be able to get to the bottom of it. do strange distubances still occur or have they stopped and when?

There “might” be an explanation for the sensor lights, depending on how they were set. Our sensor lights in the back yard go off at odd times during the night, but my hubby has them set to catch anything that comes in the yard. So it does – every cat, every racoon, etc. If it moves, that light comes on. Fortunately for us, we don’t get a ton of them or I’d be making hubby revamp the height level.

Wow cool… Have you or your friend investigate the hauntings?

It could be you or your friend that is haunted? Doesn’t mean you had to of sinned or anything it could mean one of you two is gifted or maybe both???

I agree with Jaybee about the sensor lights… I have them in my back yard and the critters of the night keep setting them off lol… Or should I say making the lights come on all night long… We have allot of nocturnal critters here lol.

Slightly random question that occured to me, you said you took your cat out ‘as company’ – did your cat show any signs of being freaked out in the back yard? Or stare at things you couldn’t see? Just wondering as sometimes animals can be more sensitive than us.
