A Lost Friend A Story Of Closure

Posted on February 11, 2009

Around ten years ago I lived on a small street in a village in the north of England, my neighbour and I were very close, she was a single mum and had a daughter, Kel who was 14, the same age as my own daughter. Every Friday they would go to visit an old friend who lived in a near by village, my daughter was always around at their house, we would always see them off, with the usual, ‘take care,’ ‘drive safely’ we were all so close. But this night they didn’t go, I would watch them from my window, wave them off, it seems a strange thing to do, but we were so close. I thought nothing of it, it was a treacherous night, I had never seen rain like it, even in England!

I phoned, no answer, I waited, phoned again, still no answer. I began to worry. It seemed so far fetched, me worrying like this, but I was, still am a very nervous person, I told my daughter to go round, see what was up, she told me not to worry so much, I was embarrassing with my worrying. She dashed around. I left the front door open, and stood in the doorway. I don’t like her going out in the dark, I wish now I had never sent her round. She was in there for what seemed like eternity, I kept calling her name, ‘what’s up, Laura?’

I began to panic and went round, the lights were all on the TV was blaring. I walked into the living room, nothing was out of place. I went into the kitchen and what I saw, turned my world upside down. Laura was under the kitchen table her eyes fixed on the two bodies on the floor. I screamed and grabbed Laura, told her to leave, I knew this would kill her. Psychologically. I have never opened up about this story, I only share this because if I don’t release these daemons they will be with me forever.

One year on, a new family move into the house. They were nice. A friendly couple with a five year old daughter, I don’t think they were aware of the events which happened a year earlier, at this time we still did not fully understand why they were murdered, a mystery.

One morning I was hanging the washing out and Tanya, our next door neighbour came out, she looked ill, lack of sleep, I asked her what was wrong, she told me her daughter, Emma had not slept all night, had been having nightmares all night, supposedly been seeing things. What things? I asked. She said she had been dreaming about a girl, who would not stop screaming. Tanya went on to describe the girl, I went cold, it sounded exactly like Kel, I couldn’t believe it, surely this five year old couldn’t have known?

I kept my head down, toying with the idea of telling them about the satanic happenings in their new home. I decided against it, it probably wouldn’t happen again. Later I found Tanya had been suffering hallucinations, seeing vague shadows feeling presences, her daughters dreams continued. She told me she needed to find out about the house. She asked me if I knew anything. I couldn’t lie to her. I told her, but it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, she was angry. She couldn’t believe I had never told her sooner, that I had let her go on living in that ‘hell house’ as she put it. She said she couldn’t even go in on her own, she would have to occupy herself in the garden or at the shops until someone came home.

They left a month later, I went into the house several times after. I had a spare key, that no one knew of, The place hadn’t changed much since my friend lived there, new wall paper and a lick of paint was all that differed. I decided to take photos, not sure why, I felt I needed closure. When the photos were developed I scanned through them a couple of times, smiling at the memories of years ago, then when I was putting them in the album I noticed something, in an old mirror, left from when my friend lived there there was a faint outline, I could make it out, just. I knew it was Kel, I sobbed. I tried but failed so many timed to get this photo onto your website. I have a great emotional tie with this photo, this story means a lot to me, treat it with respect.
