The Homestead Spirits

Posted on August 9, 2009

I’d like to start off by saying that this isn’t about one dramatic experience or event, but a lot of little things over time that have built up, and recently seem to have started escalating.

I live in a house by a pine forest. We’re the original owners of the house, my parents having built it about a year after my older sister was born. We’ve had numerous pets come and go, but only one person has ever died on the property: my mother. The experiences we’ve had extend far before that event, and people other than my family have had similar events in the house.

We have two spirits on the property: The Warden and The Darkness in the Basement. We’ve also had numerous small experiences throughout the rest of the house.

The Warden

The Warden is outside of the house, and sticks around the pine forest. My cousins, sisters, and I used to play outside all of the time, especially in the pine forest, and we never felt anything odd or unusual. We’d try to scare each other, especially when camping, but nothing ever felt odd about it.

When my fiancé and I started dating, I would have to borrow my aunt’s car to pick her up for dates or to bring her back to my house. My aunt lived right next door, and so I’d hop over to borrow the keys or let her know I was taking the car. Whenever I would go over, I would have my fiancé wait outside. After the first time, I would always find her pressed up against the door so hard that I would nearly knock her over leaving the house. It wasn’t until three months ago that she told me why.

She felt as though there was something in the forest watching her. I had been feeling the same thing whenever I came home from college, but I chalked it up to nerves, or the recent deer herd that moved in. After my fiancé told me that she felt watched, my sister said she felt it, too. To me, it never felt menacing or evil, just…curious.

The Darkness in the Basement

The Darkness in the Basement is something that seems to have escalated over time. Unlike the forest, ever since I was little, I hated being by myself in the basement at night. During the day, fine. With other people, no sweat. At night and alone, you couldn’t pay me to stay down there. It only became tolerable once we put a TV and a video game system down there.

My little sister and I are the only people, aside from my friends, that spend any significant time in the basement. I thought I was the only one who had felt the anxiety, until I learned that my little sister did as well. I was playing video games with her in the basement one night, and she wanted to switch to a single player game. I was getting tired, so I handed the controller to her and headed up the stairs. I didn’t even get my left foot on the stair before I felt her slam me into the wall and hug me tight. She just kept whispering “Don’t go, don’t leave me” over and over again until I agreed to stay.

It had gotten so bad that we learned how to turn off the lights in the basement in such a way that we would never have to be in the basement in the dark. My father is a very stoic man, and refused to admit that he felt anything in the basement until last week when he asked me to put his laundry in the dryer. I jokingly asked him, “Scared of the basement?” to which he replied, “I am now.” He said it with such a straight face, and he refused to talk about it any more, so I knew he wasn’t joking.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding the darkness in the basement, I am more than happy to hear them. I recently confronted the Darkness, and it seems to have backed off enough where I can be downstairs without wanting to fly up the staircase.

Recent Events

Recently, I began to notice that whenever I am in one part of the house, I feel a presence in a part that I can’t see. If I’m back in the computer room, I could swear there’s someone in the kitchen. If I’m in the living room, I feel there’s someone in the bedroom. It gets really bad if I’m taking a shower. Over the past three nights or so, I’ve been hearing conversations, usually a man and a woman, out in the living room. At first, I thought someone left the TV on, but I was home alone, and was going to be for hours, and knew that I hadn’t turned the TV on. This has recurred over and over again.

Perhaps the most shocking thing that has happened recently has been the passing of a beloved family pet. I was stricken with a severe abdominal ailment, for which I needed medication and eventually surgery. Shortly after my surgery, my dog, who had been healthy and happy, stopped eating and died. During the autopsy (which we had done because we have another dog and feared poisoning by plant or household cleaner) we discovered she had cancer in over 50% of her stomach. It had to have grown quickly, and I somehow can’t help but feel like something supernatural was involved. As soon as my stomach ailment was treated, my dog got a stomach problem that killed her. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I am open. Thank you.

Great post…are there any neighbors nearby? I’d ask them if they have any similar issues. It could be the land. Though I don’t have too much advice, I would say that you should tell them that you don’t want to harm them but they are not welcome in your home. They are not living and that they need to move on. Just do it calmly and in a way that suggests you are in control.

That`s a very interesting story of yours. Although i don`t believe in ghosts or demons, i still have an interest in them. I always try and force myself to imagine seeing a ghost or having a feeling of a ghost nearby which i hope would let me see a real or fake ghost. So far i`ve never seen a ghost but that hasn`t stopped me from becoming a believer.

I found your story very interesting. Please contact me if you ever have any issue dealing with the entity.

If the spirits are not causing serious problems to your household, then I would suggest to leave them alone.

I have heard that certain animals can take away certain ailments. For instance, Chichaua’s (may have mis-spelled the name) have been known to take asthma from their owners. Doctors would say we are crazy. But what do they know about spiritualuty.
    Maybe, but you never know.
