Hello all… My name is Austin, I’m 29 years old and I live in the “Land of Enchantment” (Google it if you don’t know). The Native American culture here is huge and I have a deep respect for the spirituality that many tribes bring. Why this relates you will see as you read further in.

I have had two experiences in my life. They were both very long ago and I have only retold them a handful of times. What I absolutely remember without a doubt is that it was the scariest experience of my life (I was inches away from being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting when I was 17 and that pales in comparison) So here it goes…

The first was when I was around 8 years old. I was sleeping in bed with my mom as I often did. I woke up in a sweat because I had too many covers on me and I wanted to kick them off but I couldn’t. Something wasn’t allowing me to move. My first reaction was to scream but I couldn’t and I was absolutely terrified. I heard a voice emanating from everywhere all at once. It thundered from downstairs, the bed, and in front of my face. I couldn’t understand what the words were, as they were unimportant anyways. What was really going on was mental and spiritual warfare. The demon (?) was trying to trick me in to believing that “everything is okay… there’s nothing to be afraid of. Let’s be together” sort of a thing. It was a feeling being conveyed, not words being rationalized. I tried to scream for my mom and my mouth would open but I couldn’t get enough air in my lungs to make a sound. I tried to move to clutch her and wake her but I was pinned to the mattress. In my head I told it to go away and I think it understood it wasn’t going to get much from me. Without a doubt the scariest part of all was the parting laugh it left me. It was the most vile, hateful laugh and I don’t know that it could ever be re-created. What was strange was it was the reverse of how the voice came in from everywhere all at once. It was a completely non-linear event that can only be described as this the laugh lasted a long time but it only took a short time to happen.

The second time was about 6 to 7 years ago. I was living with a girl (Dawn) from the Gila tribe. I had been riding BMX with a couple of friends that evening and I went home fairly late (maybe 10 or 11 pm) and headed to the shower and then bed. I woke up very suddenly and very scared. My head was facing to the right when I woke and I could see Dawn asleep. I immediately felt there was a very heavy weight on my chest and I couldn’t breathe. I opened my mouth to ask her for help. What I was saying in my head was “Dawn! Help me please! Wake up I need your help! I’m so scared I can’t breathe!” but no words came, not even breath. Suddenly her mouth opened and she was speaking in tongues! It wasn’t Dinee or any other native dialect. I have no idea what language it was but it didn’t even sound human. I mustered all the strength in my body and was able to turn my head straight up and saw two glowing red eyes peering straight in to my soul. I said in my mind ” I can’t do this right now. I don’t know what the hell is going on but you can’t hurt me.” I closed my eyes and went back to sleep.

I told Dawn what happened the next day and she was very compassionate to my situation. She called a medicine man from her tribe to come bless the house but I never felt safe sleeping there again. I don’t believe that this was something from her, I don’t know where it came from, and I don’t believe it is the last time something like this will happen to me. I know that God will protect me from any physical harm.
