Philippine Elves

Posted on June 8, 2010

Every summer, my best friend and their family would go to Bicol to visit her grandmother. She told me a lot of scary creatures she or her relatives encounter, one of these are the Nuno (elf or dwarf).

My best friend always go to the back garden of her grandma to enjoy the beautiful sight, when she was about to sleep; she noticed a small scary person sitting beside her. she was so scared that she was about to faint, the “Person” was not human nor was a spirit. it was wearing a tattered blue hat, it also had sharp teeth and scary brown foundation (skin). She saw the “thing” leave and disappear in front of an old mango tree. as soon as it left, she hurried back inside the house and told her cousins about it. her cousins told her it was a “Nuno sa Puno”.

Everyday, my best friend sits on the bench and waits for the nuno to come. and every day, the Nuno’s hat changes, some times it was pink, red, green and all the colors of the rainbow. Even though her cousins warned her not to visit the elves, she really wanted to know about them. lastly, her cousins told her that a man once visited the Nuno; Her eldest cousin claimed to see the man disappear into thin air. that made my friend scared so she never went back again near the bench.

On the last day of summer, her family was about to leave Bicol, she wanted to see the nuno one last time, so she went back to the bench and pretended to be asleep, the Nuno came, but it’s hat was different, it was colored black. after it left, she went back to her cousins and asked them what the black color means. “It’s a bad omen! be careful, we told you not to visit them!”

When she left the province, nothing bad happened… I guess her cousins were just scaring her. but she knew that the NUNO she was real.

no offence i dont know if i believe in elves but dwarfs maybe.has anything happened to her since?

hi anna, i don’t believe in dwarfs either even though there are folklore in my country about one which are called duennes……here’s a little about them,”Are spirits of children who died before they were baptized and as such, they are fated to roam the forests of Trinidad, practicing their wide repertoire of pranks, mostly on living children who are enticed away into the forest and are then left abandoned. Duennes are sexless, their feet are turned backwards and they have no faces (although they do have small round mouths). On their rather large heads they wear huge mushroom-shaped straw hats.

To prevent the Duennes from calling your children into the forest at dusk, never shout their names in open places, as the Duennes will take their names, call them and lure them away.”

i always say i would believe it when i see which i never did…so…..LOL

but google nuno “A Nuno or Nuno sa Punso is a dwarf-like creature in Philippine mythology. It is believed to live in an anthill or termite mound, hence its name. Literally, nuno sa punso means Ancestor/Grandparent of the anthill.”……

thanks for the story NocturnalLady…..hope ur cousin is ok

and to think these elves are fashionable! i’m sure these experiences have been told for many generations. it would be neat if we could actually have photographic evidence!!!

yes that would be so cool….and to think the colors of the hat changes……stories like these among others have been told by 3 generations in my family…. i have been meaning to do a story about my country’s folklore….it’s jus the time to sit and do it…..

i wish i too can get to see one of them! It’ll be amazing…my mom saw a dwarf on our house and according to her the form of that thing is very different from the common told form of a dwarf… She said its small but not very much and has fluppy thick fur, it has a round figure and does not have a hands or feet, its just round like a ball..the most amazing part is that it shine brightly white, not dazzling shine that hurt your eyes..just a warm shine that doesn’t give you a fear feeling but instead it give calm and peace…
After she told us the story..i wish that one of this day i might be able to see that creature too.:)

Hah, not having my glasses on, I looked at the title and thought, “Oh, hmmm, that sounds interesting,” so I clicked on it to read the story.” Imagine when I discovered it said, “Phillippine Elves,” and not “Phillippine Elvis.” :-)

  6. Brandon says:

i have a friend that saw a somewhat similar creature. it lived in the walls of the house which was old and decrepid. according to him hed see it every night just watching him and his family. he said it was the ugliest thing hed ever seen. for those of you whov seen the show grimlins thats how it looked and not there furry form. and for those of you who havent it was about 2 foot had a enourmous mouth that had really sharp lookn teeth was brownish black a stubby little tail and like pointy elf ears, also that its eyes were bright yellow and that he always got a since of evil from it, basically a starved ugly kinda mucsle thing.

Sounds like a bunch of hogwash no offense.
