My wife and I lived in an old farm house in the country from 2000 – 2006. In the living room there were four large crank out style windows that overlooked the driveway below. We would always hear noises that sounded like car doors opening and closing. The noise was so distinct that it would make us go and look down on the driveway to see if anybody was there, but there was never anyone there. We would also hear footsteps through the house, but nobody else was there.
We told people about it and of course they didn’t believe us or they said we had over active imaginations. But my sister in law and her kids stayed with us a for a few weeks, and the first morning of her stay she told us how she heard someone walking down the hall way, and she came out to talk to which ever one of us it was, but there was nobody in the hall. She said how she never believed us about the sounds, but now that she heard it herself. Over the two weeks she also heard the car doors a few times.
We never felt threatened or scared, so it was all good, but I do believe that house is haunted. By who? No idea. For what reason? No clue. We moved into town due to the instability of gas prices, and someone else now lives there, and I’ve been wanting to ask them if they hear the noises too.

Kenneth,
I am no authority, but I continue to read ghost stories (as many as possible) where things in the story are in some way inconsistent. Some of these inconsistencies are a little scary. Maybe these ghosts can do more than we think they can, and sometimes what seems to be happening isn’t really happening anywhere except in the mind of the observer.
I’ve read quite a few stories here and other sites. I get the idea that sometimes that these kinds of sounds are not real, that is to say whatever your brain is observing isn’t coming from your ears. I think that these “sounds” are being created and transmitted directly to the brain…, that is why some people in the same room do not hear what someone else is “hearing.”
Don’t attempt to communicate in any way with these beings. Seems that once you open a conversation with a ghost you may get a lot more than what you bargain for…, and don’t tell them they are “welcome” in your home. Don’t believe me? Keep reading and you’ll find others have suffered for being careless. It’s OK to tell them to leave, they might not like it, and that is no guarantee they won’t come back.
One story I read there was the sound of footsteps on hardwood floors where a ghost was walking up and down the hallway all night long. Turns out that the hallway was actually carpeted. What do you think? What were they actually “hearing?”

That was a good story….. im glad you guys got out of that house, as things could have become worse, sometimes they do.. i also wonder if the new tenants hear anything??? i have always cast the demons out, and invited the good spirits to stay, as long as they didnt have any harmful intent…. and we have lived together my whole life, in all of my houses…. i have moved a lot…
some things that i hear and see, others do… sometimes they dont….. most people dont want to hear and see them…. it just freaks them out.. well,, sometimes it freaks me out too.. but,,, its something that i live with….
there are many types of hauntings,, that almost sounds like a risidual haunting, the same thing happening, over and over…. maybe you could get some info. on that house… of its past… would be very interesting…..from the story, it sounds as if, someone was coming home, and slamming thier car door, then walking down the hall…..hum,, i wonder who used to live there???
