The Tiverton Avenue Demon

Posted on October 19, 2010

First I must state that this is a true account of something that actually happened. If you do happen to see this in a movie (maybe a book) some years from now it is because I am a screen writer.

Jamie, Lawrence, Billy and John. If you guys happen to see this, make a post and say hi. It has been too many years.

The year would have been 1982 or ’83. We all were about 12 years old. Transformers (the toys and cartoon) were big at that time and we were on our way to a local mall to buy some, as it was Friday and we had just gotten our allowance for the week and had been saving toward the toys we so wanted.

It was Summer and late evening as we made our lazy way back from the mall. Taking side streets and talking and BSing each other as boys will do. At the time we really didn’t know what street we were on, but you know how it is, you kinda know your area and what direction home is.

It is a rather short street in a nice upper middle class area and has a small parkette right in the middle of the street. I now find this rather odd as most parkettes are in open areas, not right in the middle of a tiny sleepy little street.

All parks in the city of Toronto have a water fountains and this one did as well. Having spent all our cash on toys and after a long walk (almost an hour each way) we were thirsty and having come across this park (that none of us knew), the fountain and cool water it could provide, we stopped to have a drink.

I can’t remember how many of us had a drink before someone (I think it was Billy) said “What is that?”

We all looked to where he was facing. He was frozen, bent over the fountain, looking into the park. What we saw and what happened after still haunts me to this day. I just turned 40 this year.

It was big, like the size of a pony. and the best I can say looked like a cross between a cat and a wolf. Jet black with dark red eyes. And it almost looked like it was smiling. Like the way a happy cat will bare it’s teeth a bit when you are stroking it. It was not touching the ground, but looked to be a bit above it, not floating as it did look to be solidly planted on all four legs. All this was scary enough, but what really drove a spike of fear into my heart was the way it moved when it started to come toward us. Sly, slow and easy. Almost kindly, like it wanted you to touch it, like it wanted to play.

I don’t know who it was that screamed. “Run,” ways all they said. And run we did. Ran toward where lived. To home and safety. Ran till our lungs burned and our legs hurt.

We were almost back to the area we lived in when I looked back. It was still coming and right when I looked back it stopped. It was too far to tell if it was looking at me, but it swung it’s head really fast to the right, was like that for a few seconds and dove right through the front wall of a house. Just passed right into it like the creature was nothing but air. We kept going a short ways until we got to a well lit area with stores and people. This was also where we lived.

We hopped it was gone. But stayed where we for about 2 hours talking about what had happened. Sharing an unspoken fear of going home, in case it might follow and know where we lived.

Some time after, I’m not sure how long, we heard the wail of sirens. Many fire truck and police cars on the next street over. The street where we lost “it.” After a lot of debate and some tears. We went to see what was going on. We had to.

Yes. It was that house they had been called to. We saw paramedics bring and old man out on a stretcher. They were in no rush, he was long gone. A fireman came out just after that and he was carrying something. He showed this to some police and another fireman. I heard the words “gas pipe” and “he didn’t stand a chance.” The other fireman said “what’s that.” The pipe that he was holding had four ragged slashes that looked both ripped and almost melted at the same time. They looked like claw marks.

The old man had a dog and I guess it had been in the back yard and a police officer was bringing it around to the front of the house. When they go to the front the dog bolted right for the spot where “it” had entered the wall of the house. It bit and clawed at the spot so violently, that the poor dog pulled out some of it’s claws and was leaving bloody paw marks all over the wall.

I could not take anymore, I was shaking, dizzy and felt like I was going to throw up. I just turned and walked away. John was beside me and grabbed my hand. He was shaking too. We all went home without saying a word and never talked about what had happened ever again.

I have never, and by the grace of God (and I am not an overly religious person), hope never to see this or anything like it again in my life.
