Since I was eight I have had this dream. I don’t have many memories from before I was eight about anything though. Just enough to confirm that I’m (probably) from this planet and that I’m (plausibly) human. Here’s a short story of my dream:
“Stay away from them. They’re coming, and they want you’re blood”
I am in complete darkness. But I can feel. I am on a circle of metal, sticking up through a sea of a warm, thick, liquid, the smell of iron fills the air and I know almost immediately what the liquid is but I dare not think about it. I feel a sensation of the air turning thick and something closing in around me and know it’s my claustrophobia, I’m in a small space.
Suddenly a scream fills the air and I’m surrounded by a bright red glow, coming from a source I do not know of. Then I saw it, It’s tail was finned, and was rather like the one of a fish, but more eel like in length compared to the upper body, that seemed like that of a starved, female, human until it looked up at me and I could see it’s face, it’s hair was a brown, black and it’s eyes rather feline, but with a fierce and cruel glint that only the most caring or least cruel of the human race can achieve in the most dire of situations, driven mad.
I could clearly see the veins in it’s eyes, they shifted colors, making them hypnotizing. I slowly dragged my eyes over it’s other features, it’s nose only came up a millimeter or so, the nostrils like a sharks. Gills flapped on it’s neck, taking in the water, or should I say blood, I could see that now, there was no hiding it, the creature was swimming in a sea of blood. I couldn’t see the walls, but I could sense they had gone, leaving the red glow in their place. It stung my eyes to look straight at it, so I drew my attention back to the creature, and immediately regretted it. It’s nose wasn’t the only thing borrowed from sharks. It’s teeth were jagged, built to kill.
I took a step back reflexively, and fell. I didn’t have any thoughts as I fell, except for the creatures eyes on me, watching me, waiting for me to land in it’s domain.I knew what the creature was now, despite it’s appearance. It was a mermaid, and me. I was it’s prey. I land in the water and feel myself sink, no, not sink, I was being pulled down. And now I’m drowning in a sea of blood. The blood of my friends, family, all the people I’ve ever met, and the blood of the people before me who suffered the same fait, my ancestors, but only on one side.
They suffered this fate, whether they died on fire, mauled by a bear in anger, trampled by the moose in fright, knocked off a cliff by an eagle in defense, or simply of old age. They suffered the same fate. Killed by mermaids, in a sea of blood.
I’m still having it every night! I think I have a phobia of mermaids now!
