I’ve had a few weird experiences in my life, but I tend to forget things easily. I’m kind of an airhead, and have always endured playful teasing about my forgetfulness. About two months ago, though, I had an experience that is refusing to leave me alone.
I thought maybe I had just been seeing things when I noticed it, but the longer I thought about it, the more it unsettled me. I was driving home on a back road that I use frequently. In fact, a lot of people use it frequently – it’s almost not even a back road anymore because the area I live in is really growing in size and population.
On the road, there are a few farms and a daycare, and on the left you’d come up on a big plaza with a grocery store, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, some gas stations and such. At the intersection at the end of this road is a major highway and my alma mater, so this isn’t really some dark “out in the woods” kind of situation.
Just before I reached the grocery store plaza, I noticed something on the right side of the road. I said to my best friend who was in the passenger seat “I think I just saw the Jersey Devil.” Now – I’m not saying this was the Jersey Devil. It wasn’t – I’d lived in Jersey for a while, but I’m about 300 miles or so from it now. But the thing was so bizarrely shaped, that I didn’t know what to call it.
It wasn’t reflecting any light from the streetlights nearby. It seemed like someone had cut a shape out of the real world. It was the size of a medium dog, maybe a little larger than a lab, but was moving almost like a cat. It had large, pointed ears (or horns, there was no detail) and no eyes to speak of. I didn’t notice any paws or anything, it seemed to be a part of the ground. It also had a wickedly curved tail… I really wish I could describe it better.
It’s still bothering me, to be honest. When I go out at night, I look for it everywhere I go, like it might have followed me. I’m not a really paranoid person, but even tonight, coming home from seeing a movie with my best friends, I peered into the woods near my house expecting to see it waiting for me.
