Home Alone

Posted on October 4, 2010

This happened towards the end of my sixth grade school year.

On Tuesdays coming home to an empty house wasn’t odd for me. Both my parents work the night shift so they sleep during the day, but on Tuesdays they always go out to see a movie. My oldest brother, Eric, would still be student teaching. My oldest sister, Kori, would still be at work. Jeni and Kevin would be at film club or drama club meetings. So in sixth grade, on Tuesday afternoons, I would have the entire house to myself until about five.

Being almost twelve at this point I was long past being scared of being in a house alone. I always knew what to do when I got off the bus. Cut through the grass, get my key out, unlock the door, go inside, lock the door.

It was around my birthday when this happened. I remember that because my aunt sent me an sunflower angel figurine for my room, and I still had it downstairs. I’ll mention that I am very, very, very prone to breaking things, and since I was about to change rooms and I didn’t want the angel to be in more then one piece, I left it downstairs on the pass-through.

On that day I came home, set my bag down by the stairs, turned on the TV, and went and got a glass of water. I filled up my cup and went back to the living room to rot my brain. I was watching the show “A Haunting”, I love scaring myself(even though it’s hard for me to get scared) by watching ghost stories while home alone. When the show was over(it was about four pm, still had an hour until anyone got home) I took my glass back into the kitchen. The angel figurine was out of the box. Okay, so I am pretty sure that I didn’t take it out. Maybe I did, but I don’t think so. I put the glass in the sink and put the angel back in the box. I know that I did put the angel back in the box.

I heard a crash from the basement. I went downstairs. Nothing creepy about this one, my cat knocked over a chair. I put the chair back up, then went back upstairs. I was going to start my homework or go on the computer or something. I came back upstairs and when I passed the pass-through I stopped. The angel was out of the box again.

Again I was confused. If the angel was only out of the box once, I would say that I just forgot to put it back in. But it happened twice and I knew I put the angel back into the box.

I opened the box and put the angel back in it. This time I closed the box and re-taped it.

I went back into the living room and started to read. On one part of our couch we have a reclining seat. I was sitting there and pushing the seat back a little. About three or four minutes later, I was jerked forward. I looked behind me expecting to see the cat or dog, I didn’t see either of them. The dog was on the other side of the couch curling up in the sun as he had been for about twenty minutes, the cat was still downstairs.

I wasn’t scared at all, in fact I was mad. No one has the right to come into my house and push me around like that! I went to make sure that the back door was locked, it was. I look at the pass-through, sure that the angel was going to be out again. The angel wasn’t out, but the tape was gone. Well, not gone but it was peeled off. That made me so pissed. I decided that yelling at whatever was in my house wasn’t going to be a very good idea. I took my book upstairs to my room.

It was late May, so it was starting to get hot outside. I had my window open, and my door open a crack. The wind wasn’t blowing. My door opened itself all the way, then closed itself all the way shut. I set my book down and opened the door. No one was outside of my room. All the other bedroom doors were closed, I went downstairs to the living room, no windows were open.

I look at the clock. It was about 4:50. Jeni and Kevin should of been home right about then. I unlocked the door for them(neither of them having a house key) so I wouldn’t have to just come down and unlock the door. I went back upstairs and locked my door.

Nothing else happened to me that day. Jeni and Kevin were home within minutes, Eric soon after them, then Kori, the mom and dad. I never told any of them what happened to me that day. This is the first time I have really told anyone.

The house that I live in is about seventeen years old, there was no house before it, and it has only been my family to live here.
