Friend in a Dream

Posted on October 2, 2010

I have had a few experiences in my life so far, this experience I had was the most heart wrenching and sad.

When I first moved out of my parents house and moved to a different area for work, I lived with my boyfriend at the time, and we lived in the same yard as our one college, one big yard with our office and houses on the same yard.  Well we got along with them very well, me and the woman who lived with her husband and two small sons were actually born on the same day, just ten years later (she was older than myself). We became very good friends, and about six months later her husband died in a fatal car accident. It was the saddest day of our lives. The morning we still saw him, always joking around, he was that type of person. And she was not there she slept over at her parents house, about an hour away, waiting for him (after he had his day shift for the second work he did)they would have gone away from there. And while working, the accident happened.  We were really shocked, could not believed it happened.

A few days later, his wife came back home (from her parents) after the funeral, and she started sorting out the house and packing up to go live with her parents. It broke my heart to see her so sad, and not even thinking about the children, the one was only two years old.

That night I had a very vivid dream about her husband. I was outside standing and watching her in the kitchen packing, and then he just walked up to me, saying “hi”, I looked at him, greeting him back and in my dream I knew he died. He then said to me “You know she cant see me at the moment, I have tried to speak to her, but she wont hear me. Please tell her that I love her very much, and that I am really really sorry.”

I woke up in sweats after that, I woke my boyfriend and told him what happened. He firstly looked at me with big eyes, and then said to me I should not be making jokes. I just looked at him, not knowing what he was talking about. He then said to me, that he spoke to her brother who was out with him the night before (she was sleeping at her parents house waiting for him the next day) and that he had gotten drunk the night before, she knew and was very angry at him and her brother for it. And her brother felt very guilty for every thing. The next day he died with her still mad at him and did not ever have a chance to say sorry. So I thought about it for a while could not sleep for the rest of the night.

You know you have dreams, but this one was not the same. It was different, real, and I could remember everything so vividly. Anyhow, I thought about it for a few days. And one day, she was packing in the kitchen exactly like in my dream, and I stood there looking at her. And I just walked over and took her in my arms and we hugged, and I told her what I dreamed. She could not stop crying, but you could see the guilty feeling she had been having turning just to grieve. She cried for a long time in my arms, after she calmed down, we sat down speaking and she was very relieved after hearing those words. I was glad that I could make her feel a little less guilty but it is always hard.

Today, 8 years later, I still think of her and her two boys, who had to grow up without him, especially the smaller one, he wont even remember him. We still talk every now and then, but she moved away. And the thing is, we should appreciate life every day. There were three people involved in that accident, only one died. The guy that was with him in the car only had one little scratch, and the second guy in the other car only broke minor bones. But he died, he did not have his safety belt on, was swung from the car and hit his head very hard against the tar road, never woke up again. Every time that we drive by that spot, I still say a little prayer for him, and I do say “hi”.

I have never had a dream like that again.
