Waverly Hills Sanitarium The Haunted Hospital

Posted on September 1, 2007

Waverly Sanitorium Haunted HospitalOne of the most well known haunted “hot” spots is the Waverly Hills Sanitarium in Louisville, Kentucky. Back in the early 1900′s the Louisville area was experiencing the highest rate of tuberculosis infections in the country.

Most patients who went to the Waverly Hills Sanitarium were doomed to stay there until their death. The bodies of the dead were transported through tunnels to the bottom of the hill from where they were taken away and burned.

After the discovery of the tuberculosis vaccine the Waverly Hills Sanitarium was closed down. It was converted into a convalescence home in 1962 but was closed due to alleged abuse of patients in 1982.

There have been many reports or paranormal activity at the old hospital including multiple sightings of an elderly lady running from the hospital bleeding and begging for help. Spooky indeed!

This building has been featured on programs like Scariest Places On Earth, Ghost Hunters, and the Celebrity Paranormal Project.

I am from Louisville and must admit I am unfamilier with the story. Is the buliding still in existence? If so, where is it located? thanks Rick

    • Rylee says:

It does indeed still exist! This building is known as one of the most haunted hotspots in the world!!
I saw a paranormal team investigate it once..
On the first floor, it is mainly dead spirits of patients.
The 3rd and 4th floors are where things get exciting!!
On the 3rd floor there is the spirit of a deceased child in the surgical suite. She is a very clear responder… She leaves when she hears whoever is there is leaving.
On the 4th floor, there are two very creepy things. One is the “Creeper” a spirit who crawls on the ceiling and floor on all fours.
Then people have said dopplegangers are on that floor. It is said if you run directly into your doppleganger you will ide. But some of the workers have been reported to have been seen on the 4th floor when they weren’t even working that day!!

  2. Tammy Settles says:

Do you know the name of the child, I think it’s supposed to be a little girl that haunts Waverly? A local radio station is running a contest and that’s one of the questions.

  9. Joanne says:

The name of the little girl that rolls the ball is Sally. She was a little girl that had got sick with TB. She always loved to play ball but nobody would play with her. She used to sit on the floor and roll her ball by herself. She soon died form the TB. Now when you go there she still plays ball..

  10. tyra says:

    • Anonymous says:

I know that but the little girl didn’t have it to begin with she got it being round the other people.. My husband comes from Kentucky that is how i know…………….

      • kelsey d. says:

On GhostHunters, they said Sally lived at the hospital because her mother was a TB patient.

  13. heather arvin says:

hey. im heather arvin. and my family is from jackson county from where waverly hills sanatarium is located. my great great great grandparents the harshes were said to be the owners or the main doctor and nurse of this hospital. Most of my past family members died of tuberculosis. I would appreciate it if you could get back with me. i would love to find out more about this and my familys past.

  14. scarygirl67 says:

I am completely fascinated by this story! This place looks so spooky, and I don’t think any place could have that much death and horror without leaving an imprint of some kind.

My heart breaks for the childrens ghosts that are there…………………forever lost and trapped in such a place. I do think the way a person’s outer body is treated upon death can make a difference. So much disrespect, even if it was done with the intent of keeping the patient’s moral from deteriorating…………it just seems like it could have been done in a more respectful way.

I’m wondering, would there be a link to any articles that describe what happened when the place was closed down in the 80′s? I would like to know more of the story behind that.

  15. kutin says:

I have heard of such place, I think the GHOST HUNTER Show and other super natural group have been to this place to proof the existing of ghost in there.

  16. chad says:

well, I have to admit that the place sounds like a good tourist attraction. Rather or not its as haunted as they say it is, Im not going to be convinced until I get the chance to go there myself, which I plan on it being this october. And If they will let me, I will be happy to stay the night in the tunnel, or room 502, or the 4th floor….I dont believe in ghosts, but spirits…somewhat I guess I do. But until I get to experience this place for myself…its all just hear say!!!!! I really hope that I am proven wrong though because It would an awesome time.

  17. Valerie says:

    Heather:

Waverly is NOT located in Jackson Co…it is located in Jefferson Co Kentucky, off of Dixie Hwy and East Pages Lane. I grew up within blocks of Waverly…and can to this day see the bldg from the bedroom window of my chidhood home. I spent many hrs playing on the grounds as a child, entering the ‘body chute’, and yes even hearing screams coming from inside the bldg as it was at that time being operated as a nursing home for the ederly.

So, for those of you that want to visit Waverly dont go to Jackson Co…go to Jefferson Co.

  18. sharon armstrong says:

I grew up running the halls there and there is some truth to a few story’s but I think the
spirits are not there to harm you , we are really disturbing the dead being we know they live and we still go there to taunt them ………

  19. Karen M. says:

There a numerous places that have been shut down because abuse, I think it’s cause of that, that makes them haunted, after the TB epidemic they were normally turned into psychiatric hospitals, where much abuse took place. There are some here in Europe who we forced to close also, but I think the creepiest ones are in England!

  20. Autumn says:

Well of couse this place is haunted would you like it if some one put you in a place where you couldt get out of couse not

  21. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Karen, you are right, England had many TB hospitals, that finally had to be shut down!!! my mother had a childhood friend that was in one for 2 years, he actually got better and lived a normal life… he told my mom that they had a great time, running the halls, playing, as thier where many children there.

the last time i visited England, which was many years ago, we toured many old buildings and castles, it was amazing!!! it just seemed that you could walk for miles and miles..

I remember going down to one of the dungeons, and my sis banging her head, as she didnt duck down.. they where very steep, uneven steps, very narrow passage, and very low as far as height….

If i still lived there, im sure that would be a hobby of mine, visiting the old buildings….

  22. Tabitha says:

This past June my family and i did an overnight stay at waverly. There were only 8 of us and we had total access to the whole building. Just walking through the place in the daylight is spooky, but when your walking the halls with just a flashlight…..there’s really no words to describe how scary it was. We experienced a few things….. I myself seen a shadow figure move across an open doorway. We got a EVP out of the death tunnel, and one out of the lobby. The lobby EVP was really spooky , it gives me chills everytime i listen to it. We had an awkward experience in the lobby as well. You can hear doors slamming and things moving around, and on the fourth floor, myself and my friend heard what sounded like a girl humming or maybe high pitch moaning…..
I had high expectations leading up to the overnight stay, and i wasn’t let down. We’re actaully planning on going back some time soon :)

  23. ting says:

is that where they shot the film “Mirrors”?

  24. FaerchFan says:

I loved that GH episode :D it was also the setting of Death Tunnels. Good movie :)

  25. wandella Brown says:

well it got changed im goin on the 16teenth and i hope to be scared well at least amused i hope we can play with timmy

  26. Wandella Brown says:

Well im going on the 30 again and i am getting tired of waiting and i love all the fans

  27. the real deal says:

I went to waverly hills spent a $150.00. a $100 just to get in. Don’t waste your time. it is not the same place as on ghost hunters. The new owner has made it a joke with all his set up bull. like a new green ball being rolled down the stairs and the door being fix to close. I found the wires that were half hidden a long the wall

  28. ashley says:

Weeda & Leda.. Would really like too go & see if the stuff is true like people say it is! (:
