Was It Watching Me?

Posted on May 8, 2011

I live in the UK, my husband has family in Wales. So we went up on the Saturday to go to the football and see his grandparents. We were staying with one set of grandparents on the Saturday and visiting the second set on the Sunday. I’ve never stayed with either before.

The grandparents we were staying with had booked a restaurant for us to go to, and I was very much looking forward to it, however my body decided differently. From 4:00 on I was ill. So in the end I sent the 3 of them off to the restaurant since eating was the last thing on my mind. They wouldn’t be too long so I sat and read a paper and played games on my phone.

They left at 19:00, it was pitch black outside obviously being winter. I had been visiting the ‘lone’ toilet a lot (I know nobody wants to know this but its important to the story) from the bedroom I was staying in. When you walk out of the bedroom door the toilet is immediately to your right, but in front of you about 2-3 meters away is a wall with a 4-5 ft wavy-glazed window in it that looks through to the kitchen (but you can’t see through it properly). I guess it’s there to bring light from the kitchen window to the center of the house. Who knows.

Through this window you can see the rectangle shape of the outside window in the kitchen, dark outside but brighter than the inside of the kitchen which was just black.

So I feel the need to visit the bathroom and go through the door, I look through the window ahead at a glance and see a shape instead of the whole empty rectangle window, which made me look twice.

Now I wont beat around the bush, it looked quite simply like someone was standing there in the middle of the kitchen. I paused and kept looking, squinting to see if I could make another shape out of it like a coat or something, trying to think what was in the kitchen to make the shape. It didn’t move so I continued to the bathroom. I thought about it while I was in there, freaked myself out and didn’t look back at it on my way out again.

I was sitting on the bed reading a paper, but obviously in these situations, trying to distract yourself doesn’t work. And upon thinking on it, I decided to close the bedroom door. It had been held open with a cast iron vice (don’t ask), but where I was sitting I couldn’t see out of the door to the kitchen. Still I got up and closed the door, moving the vice, and sat back down again.

I continue reading the paper, obviously still winding myself up when literally less than a minute later what happens? The door makes a noise! As if someone had gently pulled on it. Immediately I look up, wait for a couple of seconds then think ‘No’… ’sod this’ so I open it again replacing the doorstop, and again not looking up toward the kitchen.

I will mention that my husbands grandparents locked all, and I mean ALL the doors before they went out. Including the kitchen door and the toilet door I was using. I had to unlock it with the key. They knew I was unwell so I don’t know why they did this, force of habit I guess. My point being that there should have been no drafts whatsoever, but I put it down to a draft pull none the less.

So I decide to break the silence (even though there were numerous ticking clocks about including a great big grandfather clock) by playing some tunes on my new phone. I will also mention at this point that even though it was a strange house and there was ticking and lots of weird sounds which I put down to piping, at one point I heard a couple of louder bangs come from the dinning room which is to the right of the kitchen. It startled me and I did look up from the paper I was reading at the time, but I can’t put it down to paranormal due to the range of sounds… though it did scare me more so, and didn’t happen again!

Then comes that time, jeez I need to go to the bathroom again! I told myself I wouldn’t look at the kitchen window, then I thought… well if it’s still there it’s obviously just something… explainable. So I got up and had to look didn’t I? It was still there, I stared for longer this time, and it really did look like a shadow of a human stood, either staring directly at me or facing the opposite way looking out of the kitchen window.

Freaked again I went back to the bedroom and played on my phone til my husband and his grandparents got back. (I was texting my husband random things for comfort, but didn’t tell him at the time).

They got back and I forgot about the shadow until bedtime. I finally fell asleep, had a strange dream someone was leaning over me and that I flipped the corner of my duvet to cover my shoulder and it got flicked back off again by something cold. I tried to wake up but I was suffering from sleep paralysis. (I suffer from it, and my dad does too, though not often thank god). So that was all odd, but I put it down to the fact I’d freaked myself out the night before.

The next morning we had breakfast and were getting ready to say goodbye in the kitchen (they use the back door in the kitchen as a main door to the house). That’s when I remembered. Without letting on, I tried to look for something that could have caused that black mass in the kitchen, I could see nothing, just the window in plain view with nothing in front of it, when clearly the night before, something with a body, shoulders and head stood at 5’5″-5’10″, was casting this silhouette through the inner window, dead still!

I was thinking about this a day or two later and realized something else too, when we went to bed that night the door was shut, and the rest of the house was locked up like before. Yet the door made no noise like it did when I was alone, now surely if it was a draft it would have continued or at least happened a couple of times more? Even though it wasn’t windy that night, just damn cold!

I have no explanation, but I needed to get it off my chest. If this was truly paranormal, then it is to my knowledge, my first human spirit encounter. However if it was not, then… well I don’t really have an explanation. I do believe in the paranormal, but like everyone says, make your own decision.

Thanks for your time.
