Was Grace Really Just Imaginary?

Posted on October 1, 2010

I was 4 when we moved into “Bobby House”. Bobby House was the Victorian style house on the corner of Oak street that had 3 floors and a turret. We called it the Bobby House because my dads boss, Bobby, gave it to us. Like I said, I was 4. Here’s my story . . .

“I’m gonna beat you Vanny!” I chased my older brother as we ran out of our car and into the new house. I ran as fast as I could to the second floor where the bedrooms were and into the one bedroom with a window seat. About a week later our furniture came. And so did Eleanor and the others. There were 4 girls and 6 boys in total. Eleanor, Grace, Mary, Lorena, Paul, Morgan, Calvin, John, Owen, and Edward. Eleanor and Grace were 11, Mary was 10, Lorena, Paul and John were 8, Morgan was 15, Calvin was 12 and Owen was 6. I played with Lorena and Grace the most, though the others were usually in our games, with the exception of Edward, who stayed in the cellar and played with Calvin.

Then, one day, I woke up to Grace sobbing next to my bed. This was all still when I only played with them once in a while and my parents didn’t know. “They . . . . *sob* le-left *sob*!” I didn’t understand, but I tried to comfort her anyway. I invited Grace down to breakfast that morning and talked to her the whole time. She chattered with me, too. I apologized to her repeatedly when I went to school, but she just smiled and said it was fine, and asked if she could play with my cabbage patch kid. I was happy to let her.

Even when I turned 18 and moved out, Grace was my best friend. When I turned 10 and I still was talking to her, my parents were worried. So we decided to talk only when we were away from them. I never thought of the fact that I knew she wasn’t imaginary, yet no one else could see her. We were best of friends. Sadly one day when I was 20, I woke up to no Grace in sight. I got over it though.

I am now 28, with a wonderful daughter of my own, Kaylee. Yesterday she came up to me with a huge smile on her face and said that she had made a new friend. I was so pleased.

“Isn’t she pretty Mommy?”

She gestured to the air next to her. I finally figured out it was an imaginary friend. I smiled and held out my hand.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Kaylee’s mother, Vanessa. What’s your name?”

Kaylee answered for her.

“Grace.”

I wonder if Kaylee’s Grace is my Grace. How could that be? I decided to try and figure it out this morning.
“What does Grace look like Kaylee?

“While, She has funny shoes with buttons on the side that really annoy her, and her dress is lavender with a darker purple ribbon around her waist. She was really blonde hair and green eyes. She has this lavender straw hat with another darker purple ribbon around it. Her dress goes to the middle of her shin. She’s REALLY good at scrabble!”

Hmmm, that sounds like her alright. Right down to the scrabble…

wow, that’s really interesting. Maybe Grace attached herself to you when you were young because she needs your help to move on but as you got older life kinda took over and you forgot how to communicate with her, or you unwittingly lost interest and left her behind and the arrival of your daughter has allowed her to try and communicate once again? not sure. Have you looked into the history of the ‘bobby’ house? have you ever tried to find out who Grace was? maybe trying to find out who she was and indeed if she did actually exist may help to uncover what it is that she wants…?
    Very interesting tho :)

  5. Dionna White says:

When people are younger they are able to see spirits because they are “pure” as you grow older you usually lose this ability when your really young but sometimes it last longer or stays with you. spirits tend to attatch them selves to people that can see them. so you didnt see grace anymore because you lost your ability at some point.

  6. jacibo says:

thats not true, there are lots of adults on this site who still see ghosts and spirits it’s not really an ability
