Waking Nightmare

Posted on May 6, 2011

Well, where do I begin? I have been searching for an answer to what happened to me for over a year, and I cannot find anyone who had this type of experience.

I woke up from a sound sleep at exactly 3:00 AM. It was strange because I looked at the clock exactly as it changed from 2:59. I heard what sounded like someone coming up the stairs and down the hall toward our bedroom. Mind you, my wife was asleep all this time. I was alarmed to say the least. I thought someone had broken in.

I reached over to the night stand and tried to turn on the lamp. It’s one of those that you have to turn till it clicks on and off. I turned it, click, and nothing. I began to think, “come on, is this really happening right now?” I tried two or three more times and as much as it clicked, the light still wouldn’t come on. At this point, I’m getting scared. I slide the lamp as close to the bed on the stand as possible. Click click, no light.

I turn and wake my wife. “Honey, wake up!” “Someone is in the house!” She said what are you talking about? I turned back to look at the lamp, and I had never actually moved it. I turned the knob and first click the light came on. I know that I had moved that lamp, and heard the footsteps and creaking of the steps. I know this actually happened, but what did happen? Was I sleeping? If so, at what point did I wake? Why didn’t I notice the transition? Were the noises real? It felt real! I cannot explain it any better, and my wife thinks I’m losing it.

I did research sleep paralysis, and it couldn’t have been that because I was able to move freely. There is a phenomenon known as Hyponopompic experiences where someone while beginning to wake up will hear sounds and smell particular smells, however everyone reports sleep paralysis with this. So, I’m out of answers. Paranormal? Absolutely! Why? Wish I knew! Can you help me?

I’m Richard, live in New York and am currently 31 years old. Thank you.
