Turn the Light Off Fool!

Posted on January 9, 2010

This  event isn’t the usual shocker story people often look for in these kind of forums. But it’s something that I never really could explain.

I moved down here to Florida five years ago. I had lost my job in Michigan and had to stay with my mom for a few weeks until I got all my resources pulled together. They had lived in the house for about a year at that time and my mom and her boyfriend said they thought they had a ghost in their home. This didn’t scare them though. My mom is a strong spirited and rational woman who lived with a war veteran with extreme PTSD for nine years. She lived with a real life demon in the flesh so it takes more than some shadow or noise to spook her.

Her boyfriend is another war veteran of Vietnam and was a cop for twenty years after. So obviously she’s hard to shake up. They told me about strange things that would happen like it was some sort of fun feature the house came with. Just things like a shadow moving across the room, the sensation of someone sitting on the couch with you, being touched, voices etc. The house was built by the landlord’s mother and that is where she died. So they thought the so called entity was the woman’s spirit. They called her the “old lady”. I doubted what they told me, as I do anytime someone tells me about these sort of things.

I came home from work one afternoon and I was a little drowsy. My mom was home and we talked a bit before I took a nap. Before camping out at my mom’s house, I lived in an apartment where the rent included utilities. I stayed at this place for over a year so I was accustomed to leaving the lights on 24-7 because I didn’t have to pay the electric bill. My mom would always get pissed about me leaving the lights on and say “Turn the damn light off you fool!” whenever I left a room. So, before I took my nap, my mom went out to do some shopping. I saw her leave through the front door and I began my pre-sleep ritual of getting a glass of water and collecting my wallet and keys in one spot before going to sleep.

Of course when I went to bed I left the bedroom light on. I was tired but it took a little longer than normal to fall asleep because I had such a busy day. I laid there with my eyes closed sorting out all the current activity until I was close to dozing off. After about 15 to 20 minutes of trying to sleep, I was in that stage of being between awake and asleep. My eyes were closed and I could see the bedroom light shinning through my eyelids. You know, that dark reddish hue. Then, I heard a loud “click” and the lights weren’t shinning through my eyes lids anymore. It didn’t alarm me because I thought my mom had probably shut off the lights, and I was too tired to even care about it.

I woke up a couple hours later and turned on the TV. Shortly after my mom came home and started putting away the groceries and stuff. I thanked her for shutting off the lights for me yet again and she looked a little confused and asked, “What do you mean?” I said, “I was in bed almost asleep and you shut the lights off for me. I heard the switch and saw the light dim through my eye lids.” That event made me forget she wasn’t home before I nodded off. She told me I was still awake and roaming the house before she left. Then I remembered that she did leave about ten minutes or so before I took my nap. Of course this didn’t make sense to me, but I remembered clearly seeing her leaving the house. This didn’t scare me, but it left me a little puzzled. I even insisted that it was her that shut off the lights even though I knew she was probably a few miles away when it happened. She told me, “No, I didn’t shut off the lights. It was the old lady.”

Even today, I still think there is rational explanation for this. But I still haven’t found answer. The light switch in the room is new and rigid. It takes a bit of force to move it with your finger let alone the possibility of the switch falling down. Nothing has happened at my mom’s house for a long time now. Which I think is good. I don’t think the dead stay in this world for any good reason. And if they do, there is a diabolical reason for it. I still don’t think that house was ever haunted. But, if I did come across anything that was blatantly paranormal over there I wouldn’t think twice to bless the house and exorcise whatever spirit is there. I don’t think anything good or positive comes from this sort of activity.

Enough of my rant. It’s nothing too sensational, but it’s the only unexplainable thing I’ve experienced.
