Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

When I was about 17, I was living in an big, old creepy house, others had said it was haunted but I hadn’t experienced anything… until that night that is.

A couple of friends and I had stayed up late, my friends decided to go to bed in their own rooms and left me awake by myself. I too was feeling tired and turned out the lights to go to bed. I had barely laid down my head when I heard a loud thud on the other end of my room. Feeling a bit alarmed I pulled the blankets up over my face only exposing my eyes,so I could peek at the area from where the sound came from. The room was black, all except for the area where the moon light was shining through a window. I couldn’t believe my eyes! There standing in the moonlight was a dark shadowy figure… no distinct features, however it was tall maybe about 6 feet or so and bulky in build. The shadow figure did not move and I stared at it for what seemed like an eternity. Panic struck, I buried myself entirely under the blankets hoping it would leave… that’s when I heard it shuffling across the room toward me. I thought my heart was going to stop!

I came up with the idea that if I was asleep, the figure would lose interest, so I began to fake snore. The thing came right up next me and was making noises… I was terrified! So I made louder snoring sounds. A few moments later I felt the bed sink in next to me kind of like when some-one sits or lays beside you. I remained under the blankets and the thing stayed right beside me… until I passed out eventually.

I woke the next day creeped out and would never sleep alone in that room again! There were a few more incidents in that house and I had someone with me to witness the hauntings. Nothing horrific but we would go down stairs in the middle of the night for a drink or something and hear the door to the basement close… thinking it was my then mother-in-law I would go down the hall to greet her, but when I’d get there she was asleep in her room. This happened quite a bit and when me and my friend would turn to go back up stairs we would hear something running down the hall towards us. We wouldn’t wait to see what it was and took off running up the stairs.

Years later I stayed the night in that house again. This time I had two kids and my then husband… it was real late at night when we arrived so our hosts were in bed. We put the kids to bed in the room next to our room and laid down ready to sleep when we heard heavy footsteps on the stairs. The foot steps continued slowly up the stairs and then stopped. I assumed it had to be our oldest kid returning from the bathroom, so I popped the door open to tell him to be quiet and get back to bed… but to my surprise he was not there! So I checked in on the kids and both were sound asleep… however, I thought maybe the oldest one was trying to scare us… so I tried waking him and he was out! I went back to my room kind of puzzled. We knew what we heard.

We were sitting and talking about it, when there was a faint tap on our door. We popped open the door thinking we would bust our son… but again no one was there! When we checked on the kids once again they were still sound asleep. At this point we were uneasy and when my husband started shutting the door to our room it flew open out of his hands. I was like SHUT IT, SHUT IT! and he did. Then once more there was another tap on the door. I told him not to open it so he didn’t.

All was quiet and we were tired so we laid back down and an overwhelming foul odor filled the room. But I was the only one who could smell it, and the more I carried on about it the stronger the smell got. I went to sleep that night practically gagging on that smell, but when we woke up the next day that smell was gone. I haven’t been in that house since and the owners have passed away. I wonder if the new tenants have had any visits?
