I was living in the country with a girlfriend. Our cottage was located up along a steep, dark, dirt road, three miles from the highway. We had only one set of neighbors whose long driveway ran parallel to ours, separated only by a tall row of cypress trees.
One evening around ten, we were visited by a male friend of ours who was in a bemused state. “Listen, you girls better get out on the road and see what’s going on with this old lady I just saw. She’s walking along the side of the road in her nighty. I dunno what she’s doing there. I asked her if she was alright and if she needed a lift but she just ignored me and carried on shuffling up the road. I probably freaked her out more than anything, being a strange bloke in a car at night. But jeezus, it’s the middle of freakin nowhere.”
Yeah, it’s dark but we’re good girls, full of concern for this poor woman who’s probably freaked out of her mind. We were aware that there was a private hospital for elderly patients back down on the highway and had heard stories of the odd escapee so we naturally assumed this was another such case.
With our arms linked tight we made our way down our driveway and turned left onto the road. Though there was a moon it was pretty scary out there and we were nervously singing softly together as we walked on. We had passed our neighbor’s property and were about to approach the downhill slope when over the crest of the road a luminous glare appeared. It was the old lady, in a white nightgown. Everything about her was white, her hair, her flesh. She was solid as you and me, but glowing.
Undaunted by our dark forms clearly making our way towards her she did not falter but continued on her very determined path. She appeared to be muttering to herself but made no sound; not even foot steps. She seemed to be hovering just over the surface of the ground.
Soon she had drawn up beside us. We tried to make conversation. “Lovely night for a walk.” Nothing. She simply carried on as if we were not there. By now she had passed us and, gripping on to each other even tighter, we turned around and followed closely behind. We asked if she was ok, did she need help? We explained we meant no harm. All ignored.
Soon she drew level with the neighbors driveway and turned up it towards the house. We took our own driveway and followed watching her through the trees. The lawns around both houses were dotted with shrubs. From behind one of those shrubs jumped out an equally luminous white cat, which we had never seen before. The old lady bent down, picked up the cat and both instantly disappeared. We both saw all of this. Logic told us she had simply stepped behind a taller bush, thus blocking her from our sight.
The next day we asked our neighbors about the old lady and the cat. They had no idea what we were talking about. Likewise the hospital staff assured us there had been no wanderers and anyway no-one of that description was currently residing.
So, what do you make of it all? Don’t forget, three of us saw her.
