The Haunted Banyan Tree

Posted on March 28, 2011

It was Christmas eve. My friend Alisha had planned a gathering of some very close friends at her place. We were enjoying all the gossip about school when the topic of ghosts came up. Alisha said that her colony is supposedly haunted and that there were many places were ghosts had been spotted. We all were curious to know if this was true so we decided to walk around in her colony and if we were lucky enough, we would experience something paranormal too.

Alisha took her camera along with her. We took some crazy pictures near a big fountain in her colony and so far we hadn’t experienced anything unusual… we were just enjoying each others company.

While we were walking we came across this huge banyan tree. It looked really scary, especially because of the dim yellow light falling on it from a street light a few meters away. We noticed that there were some kind of knobs fixed vertically in a line on it. They looked like champagne bottle corks, but we couldn’t see them clearly as they were at considerable height from us. There were some weird letters carved deep alongside every knob.

When we asked Alisha about the tree, she said that its supposed to be haunted and anyone who touched it would get possessed by the evil spirit who took shelter in the tree. Two years back her maid servant had touched the tree to prove to everyone that these were just made up stories and that the ghosts are just man’s wild imagination. There after, she started speaking in 2 voices – one hers and the other a hoarse male voice. She screamed out random words like “whisky” or “daaroo” (Hindi word for alcohol). People thought she was insane and admitted her in a mental asylum.

Hearing the ‘whisky’ part of the story made us laugh. Why on earth would a ghost want whisky? We obviously did not believe the story. Aditi (another friend of mine) and I decided to touch the tree. But Alisha kept saying that it was dangerous and even if we did not believe the story why take a risk. I told her not to worry as I already had whisky at home and laughed. But she didn’t think it was funny at all. Her seriousness made me a little nervous and we dropped the idea.

But I still wanted to know what those weird letters meant so, I took the camera and clicked a picture of the tree. Then I zoomed the picture to see if those letters mean anything, but even if they did, they didn’t make sense to me as I figured it was another language.

We walked around for some more time and decided to go back to Alisha’s place. By the time we reached her home we were famished from all the walking. Alisha’s mom served us classic Indian chicken biryani with wine. As we relished the biryani we went back to the girly gossip. I took the camera and was going through all the pictures. But when I came to the picture of the banyan tree, my eyes bulged out and I screamed in horror. All my friends crowded behind me to see what had scared me… and they saw it too…

…the place where those knobs were fixed had small blurry patches of light! It wasn’t light exactly, there was something very ghostly about it. I remember when I had zoomed the picture it wasn’t there and now it appeared all of a sudden! The thought of me touching the tree send chills down my spine. I felt sick with fear. I immediately called my dad and went home, so did the others. I had never experienced anything as negative as this before.

The memory of that haunted Banyan Tree still haunts me and I can never forget the horrible feeling associated with it so, here I am now, sharing my story. If you are reading this right now, my advice to you is… never try to mess with the other world… because it does exist.
