A while ago, probably about a month or so now, I had an idea to create a simple “Program” on Windows Vista. It would be a face, hand drawn and manipulated by me using Paint. Then I would run the various frames through Movie Maker and add sound.
The program was similar looking to “Rudy”, the computerized console face in the Jetsons. I took various clips of it rolling and blinking it’s blue eyes, wagging it’s eyebrows, and moving it’s simple squiggly line mouth. I synched these up with a copy of an old Doowop song, and the face appeared to sing the song and move it’s eyes with the beat.
My creation was so good that I made a custom screensaver out of it making several different expressions and moving it’s eyes and blinking. The programmed looks included a happy but somehow rather dim looking smile, fear, with wide eyes and a jagged grimace, sadness, and rage, with a large frown and red eyes.
When I made it a screensaver, the program, which I called “Chip”, seemed to become self aware, turning the computer on at random and opening to one of it’s two programs. I actually thought this was pretty cool until the day shortly “his” creation when I entered the room and found “him” not only self activated and running himself, but displaying a mean spirited grin which I had never even created. He quickly flipped to rage, then right into his dimwitted but happy smile, but it was too late. I knew what was happening.
I pretended to turn around and spun back suddenly to find him grinning mutinously again. He suddenly flipped to the song I had programmed him to perform, a copy of the Del Vikings Whispering Bells, but it was at full volume, which it hadn’t been. He then flipped back to the screen saver, which was supposed to be silent because it wouldn’t let me add sound to it.
As his mouth began moving the narrator suddenly activated and after a few nonsense words and numbers began to chant “Warning — dead — Warning — Dead!” I finally got it shut down and later deleted him from the machine. It ran fine for a few days after that, then would no longer start. I’m posting this from the local library.
