The Coffin Decorating Man

Posted on July 29, 2011

The story happened in a year when China’s 10-years cultural revolution has ended for a couple of years, and some rural area’s abandoned custom and traditions began booming again.

The winter of that year, an old woman in a village died and her children were so of great filial piety that they want to bury their mom in traditional custom. So master Wang, local famous coffin-decorating person was summoned to decorate their mom’s coffin. Due to a large sum of money offered by the dead’s children, Wang completed his work successfully. And the coffin looked beautifully-decorated, the dead’s family was satisfied with Wang’s job and held a banquet to entertain him. Having lot of alcohol, Wang staggered home half-drunk. Strangely , his dog barked at him frantically when he entered his yard, as if the creature did not know his master. Wang get serious at once for his teacher once told him: if your dog kept growling at you after finishing coffin-decorating job, then something unclean must have been offended and following you. But thinking over his day work, Wang thought his job was almost perfect and the dead’s soul can not be provoked. So Wang fell asleep.

The next day, Wang got up early and found that there appear a white spot on his left knee. Not taking it seriously, Wang wiped it out. But till that night, as Wang was going to bed, he found the white spot came back again, at the exactly the same position. For the next few days despite the white spot can be easily removed, but somehow it will grow again. Wang got both confused and restless by the white spot on his body, for any abnormal phenomenon is their carrier signified something unclean has pestered him. Not figuring out what happened on earth, Wang got increasingly anxious when the family mentioned the above told him about a odd thing.

This family’s children, recently, kept dreaming of their dead mom complaining that the servant her children sent for her had one leg broken and could not served her at all. Instantly, master Wang realized what was wrong with his knee. He made a human-sized paper people and burned it before that old lady’s grave. And that night, as he shovel back his trousers to routinely wipe the white spot out, he find to his delight that the haunting spot was gone for ever.

A couple days later, that family’s children notified him that they never saw their mom in dream again. What happened on earth? Only master Wang knew. According to custom, a coffin-decorating worker would make two human-sized paper people as dead’s servant in another world, but that day, one paper people’s leg was broken by a mischievous boy, and Wang should have made a new to replace the broken, which could be time-consuming and the dead’s funeral should be delayed, so Wang mended the paper people by binding the broken legs to the body, using a kind of glue make from flour, just like the color of the white spot on Wang’s knee.
