The Bad Man Watching Us

Posted on August 5, 2010

I am a single mother and my daughter is now 8 years old (she remembers almost nothing about what I am about to share with you, although I still question her from time to time).

When she was 2 years old, we moved into a new house, just the two of us. It was a newly constructed home – the paint on the walls was barely dry. At the time, I was 34 years old. My daughter would always talk to her imaginary friends, but she had a really great and vivid imagination – so I never paid much attention to it. My younger sister did the same, and she and my daughter are very much alike in almost every way, she grew out of it eventually and I figured my daughter would do the same.

One morning we were going into the garage for me to take her to daycare. As I was walking over to open the car door to where her car-seat was, she said to me “Mommy, who is that bad man standing there?” I felt my heart suddenly begin to pound as I imagined me alone with my toddler while some madman was crouched in the corner of my garage waiting to attack us. I swept her up in my arms and looked all around (even under the car), but saw nothing at all.  We had just moved in, so the garage was completely bare other than the car it housed.  I turned to her and asked (trying to sound calm) “What man, honey?  Where is he?” – she pointed into the empty corner of the garage and said “Right there, the dark and scary man.  He looks mean, tell him to go away ok Mommy?” (mind you, she was 2, so she spoke in broken words although she had very good language skills at a pretty young age – unfortunately, I cannot take the credit for that gift).  Unable to do anything, I rushed us both in the car and drove away as fast as I could.

The incident was soon forgotten until about a month later as I was (stupidly) balancing tip-toed on a chair to paint a hanging light fixture.  To my right were large sliding glass doors and my daughter was standing in front of them having an intense conversation to nothing outside.  She was responding as if she was being asked questions – saying things like “Yes, I do” and “Mm Hm” while shaking her head yes and no. I said “Baby, who ya talkin to?” and she said “The bad man” while she pointed to thin air on the other side of the glass (she said this in a tone as if to imply that I was teasing her when someone was clearly there). Having dismissed “the bad man” as a figment of her imagination, I jokingly said “Oh that’s nice, how does he like the changes I am making to the light?” – she looked as if she was intently listening for a moment and said, “He said he likes it but you better get down or you’ll be hurt”. I started to get nervous and scared and I told my daughter to come closer to me. I asked her to ask him his name and she said it was Nico.  When I asked her to describe him, the best she could do in her 2 year old language was to say he had white hair and body and was “dark” and “hiding” – this I assumed to mean that he was in dark clothing and maybe had his face obscured by something, like a hat or hair or sunglasses (or maybe even just shadows).  Anyone who has been around a toddler will know how tough it is to get any kind of information from them!

There were more incidents (too much to post all at once), but when my daughter was 5, I was scared enough to call my mother (who is very religious, while I am not at all) and admit to what has been happening and ask her what to do.  She lives out of state, but send me some blessed holy water along with a prayer to say to bless my house.  This, I thought, was stupid and pointless – but I was desperate to make it stop and I tried it.  I still have the empty holy water bottle and prayer on a shelf behind my bed.  Since that day, nothing else has happened (knock on wood).  As I said, my daughter still cannot give me details because she remembers so little of what happened.  But she does have a vague memory of “the bad man”.

Yes children like animals are more in tune with the other side… I have no doubt that your daughter id see the “bad man” but as she got older either her ability to communicate with him waned or she lost interest or better yet that Holy Water rid the house of The Bad Man…

All I can say is OH WOW! I can just hear a child doing that too. This has always freaked me out when a child will talk to someone and you can’t see anything. I do remember having imaginary friends when I was little BUT THEY WERE TRUELY IMAGINARY! I do remember that nothing was there. I was just bored because perhaps the weather was bad outside or my friends were not at home…so I would just play by myself. Geez…The hair on my arms are standing on end!!!!!

That would really freak me out if it were one of my children. But looking from an outsiders view this ” bad man ” doesn’t really sound all that bad, going by what you’ve told us. But when it comes to the instinct of a mother protecting her young you definatly made the right decision in blessing the house, and am happy to hear nothing harmful ever happend.

  9. Big Chief says:

Yes, good story. Another one with children seeing spirits. I believe that we can all see spirits but we have to be in a certain frame of mind. I written about this somewhere I believe. Children and animals can see spirits because they are in a different frame of mind than adults..

i don’t think it was really an evil demon or anything, rather just a lonely spirit wanting someone to talk to. he did tell you were going to fall, right? and if he was evil he probably would have done something sooner. but i’m glad that you and your daughter are safe :)

  12. me says:

he was probaly just a spirit who whanted to talk to someone
