For some reason, the subject came up of strange things around Monticello, Utah. I am not from there but at the time resided there. I was talking to someone who grew up there, my co-worker’s daughter, slightly younger than I. I figured she would know fact from fiction and rumor, since she grew up there. Then I told her about the cemetery I had gone to there one day. I was out just taking a walk and this one road ended at a cemetery. I told her it was so peaceful there and not spooky like you would expect. Then again, I went in the day time.
We were in her back yard lounging into the early evening. Monticello, Utah is a very tiny town, like you can drive from end to end in one mile. She just happened to live within two right hand turns of the cemetery, probably a mile and a half total. So, I said let’s go check it out since she told me she had never been there. There was a row of houses right next to it so it wasn’t scary-secluded. Except the other three sides of the cemetery which you can see from the entrance clearly was just open dirt fields with trees far off in the distance of one side and the main town road in view of the other side which also had homes.
So, we walked there, it was so quiet! We were about three to four houses in front of the entrance when in the very dark field to my left, past the end of the cemetery, was a light moving back and forth. It looked as if someone was carrying an old fashioned lantern by the top handle, and it was swinging like the person was walking, not just standing. Of course, all we could see was the light, not a person or the lantern itself.
I could see make out the dirt behind the part of the field that had this light swinging gently so I would have imagined I could see a silhouette, if there was one. All we could see was the light swinging, and my instincts told me it was deliberately coming towards us, like it had a conscience, not dormant feeling like a reflection. To test this theory out I told my friend I was going to flash my flashlight at it three times and see what happens. I did and it mimicked me, slowly and deliberately, as I had done. It was getting closer. I was in denial so just in case it was chance, I did it four times, and was mimicked again. Being in stubborn denial I flashed only twice this third time, and this light had now reached the edge of the cemetery which was quite small to begin with, like no more than half a mile in length and width. When the light mimicked me again, we decided whatever it was couldn’t have the best intentions here in the middle of the night, so we took off running all the way down the street, about three quarters of a mile. We looked back but were not sure if it was still there or some reflections of the posts of the cemetery.
We went back to her house and talked about it for quite some time in wonderment. I will never forget that. Someone told me before this happened that they don’t go walking out at night because dead Skinwalkers would get people. They believed these Skinwalkers to be dead Indian Chief’s spirits whom for some reason wanted to harm people. I never understood it because the person did not elaborate. I thought my experience was a ghost light experience but now I don’t know. What do you think?

Accounts of these strange lights go back to before Biblical times… when people felt they were getting a message from God or higher beings. These weren’t generally attributed to ghosts… rather it was believed that something celestial or divine was at work. In the tenth century A.D., one of the first English Kings known as Edward the Martyr was quite possibly murdered by his own stepmother. It is said that a year after his death, the sky over the area where the body was supposed to be hidden lit up with a strange orange light that almost seemed to be a ball of fire… Ghost Lights
North Americans talk about skin walkers and stuff like that… At the reservation you would see many shadows darker then dark itself. I was there for two weeks. I think I was in Chinle Reservation. You need two flashlights to light your way and a knife in case some stray dog tries to attack you… Oak Street Skinwalkers
