Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

I have no way to contact the woman who told me this story, so I will leave out the town, and the names, but it takes place in an affluent Chicago suburb… one of the towns that is now an expensive place to live, but just 75 or so years ago was still a rural farming community.

The woman was a client of mine, who arrived early for an appointment and had to wait in another room in my office, which is in a Victorian House, has some… “people”… which prompted her to ask if it was haunted, then to tell me her own story.

When she was a little girl her family moved into a new house in this town. After her dad tucked her in at night she saw some little lights floating around in the closet… she called to her dad and told him… and he assured her it was just her toys and shut the closet door. He left the room and the lights came back, this time outside the door.

She saw the lights every night, sometimes she would play with them and say “make a circle” or “go in a square” and the lights would. Sometimes she would be really scared and to avoid seeing them sleep with her lights on for months and months… and then find that when she tried to sleep with the lights off… the little closet lights were still there.

There was a bathroom next to her room, everyone that used it seemed to come out fast, and often have “the creeps” in there. She would tell her parents, and they would just avoid the subject or discount what she was saying. Weird things would happen, like all the shades in the room would open at the same time.

Later, after they no longer lived there her mother admitted that after she got the kids off to school she left because she couldn’t stand being there alone.

So at one point they needed some work done on the house, and the contractor had to go into the crawl space. He asked them about the work they had done with the newly cemented area that was just under her bedroom, go figure… they hadn’t done anything down there. The contractor assured them that whoever brought the cement down there would have had to carry it, bucket by bucket, to the corner of a very low, tight crawl space…no easy task.

When they bought the house they purchased it from a man who inherited the property, along with his wife, from an elderly woman. The man was a farm caretaker who took care of the property and some time ago his wife had left him, without a word, no one knew where she went or what happened to her. I guess at the closing a woman claiming to be her showed up to sign the paperwork, but they found out this was odd, because the man supposedly didn’t know where she was.

I imagine they wanted to maintain their property value, so did not look further into the cemented area in the crawl space, or maybe her dad really didn’t believe, or want to know what was in the crawl space?
