Shields Tavern Ghost Walk in Colonial Williamsburg

Posted on January 26, 2010

This happened in September of 2009, in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. I was there on vacation with my sister, my Nana, and my papaw.

Shields Tavern Williamsburg, Virginia

Shields Tavern

We were buying our tickets for the day when I noticed a flier for the Tavern Ghost walk. My Nana asked if I wanted to go to it and I said yes. My sister didn’t want to go so my papaw and my sister went back to a hotel. My Nana and I stayed. We walked to the meeting place, in front of Shields Tavern. Our tour guide led us to different places along the street. There was this story of a girl who got run over by a carriage and died on that street we were walking on. The tour guide was carrying a little lantern with a candle inside it, and she asked me to carry it. I said yes, and walked beside her. My Nana was about nine feet behind us and decided that this was a good time to take a picture of me holding the lantern. She took out her iphone and snapped a picture.

When we got to our next location, which was off to the side of the road, my Nana showed me the picture, and it looked nothing like me holding a lantern. The photo actually came out looking like a black mist, that took over most of the picture. You couldn’t see me in the picture, but you could see the candlelight, which was blurred across the screen. There is nothing to debunk this. It was not a thumb in the way of the lens because it would turn out reddish. Someone did not walk in front of the camera, (besides a ghost) otherwise you could see them, not this black mist, and the candle wouldn’t be blurred along the picture.

My Nana showed the picture to the tour guide and she said that this has happened many times before, and that we were not the first. My Nana showed the picture to the other members on the tour and they were surprised. The picture cannot be explained. I wish I could post it but I don’t know how.

Anyway, remember, we were walking on the street that the girl got run over by a carriage and died on. I figured out that later, my Nana was standing in the exact same spot the girl died on. I think the ghost girl walked in front of the camera. what do you think?

My comments name is ilovejonasbrothers. I’ll keep you posted.

    good possibility lola!

  2. The Ghost Gal says:

The ghost girl would have probably walked in front of it
I have a picture from just my street i live in and there is this very weird unlike human figure standing clearly in the middle of the street and i knew that no one was in the street when i took this picture
later on I found out that the figure was a human but had problems with its body parts and so its looked unlike human and it died getting hit by a truck
I think I see something on the neighbors roof O.O

  3. ilovejonasbrothers says:

@trolldoll1681 -Thank you. I’m not for sure it was the girl, but i think it’s a very good possibility. There was this other story that involved that street, but it was no where close to where we were.

@ The Ghost Gal – what an interesting story. I wish an apparition was in my photo!

“ilovejonasbrothers” I emailed you back about your story asking you if you would like to send the picture in to us. Did you receive my message?

  4. trolldoll1681 says:

lola, here’s another muse. maybe since the area is a historic site, and the girl being a child, the black mist could be an adult. either blocking her way towards the living or protecting her. i know this sounds kinda ghost whisperer and or poltergeist. maybe power lines or transformers or a relay station nearby could do this. i’ve seen a few transformers blow and considering what there inner workingsare and the massive amounts of electric flowing into them, it could be a hyper-sensitive area. call me a nerd, but i think there is something else we can’t see affecting our senses.

Caretaker – I did recieve your message. Since I am at my grandparents house I will ask her if she can send it to me. I am unable to do it right this minute for she is at a meeting. I’ll see if she still has the picture.

trolldoll1681 – that is a good point, but I don’t really see how it can make a picture blurr but still see the candlelight. But the mist could be an adult thing is a good muse. You see, the street is surrounded by numerous haunted places. There was another story that involved two ghosts being seen on the side of the street, but that wasn’t where we were.

There is a stry that involves Shields Tavern that I would like to share with you. In fact, I will send in a story of all the ghost stories I heard on the walk, if yall don’t mind. I think yall will find it interesting. Let me type it up….
BTW- The story will most likely bee called ‘Ghost stories in Colonial Williamsburg’ or something like that. Keep watch.
    Thanks.

    1. Your nan has an iPhone? yeah…
    2. You say you can;t post the picture but you managed to put in one of the tavern just fine.
    3. It was night time, it was probably too dark to be taking credible pictures of anything regardless.
    4. How did you just ‘figure out’ your nana was standing in the same spot? Did the tour guide tell you or have you made that part up?
    5. You love Jonas Brothers? O__o

But then I’m not ruling out the possibility, who knows?

    • Caretaker says:

Zoey – I put the photo into the post as I am the one who posts all these stories that everyone sends in.

  10. anna says:

you never know it could of been the girl.thats sad to hear what happened to her.thats cool about the picture at first ya weird but after that just cool.I probably show everone that I know the picutre.

    Zoey
    1. Yes my nana has an iphone and so do I. My nana’s not that old.
    2. I can’t post the picture because my nana accidentally deleted it. I visited her and asked her if I could see the picture and she said she deleted it because she though it was a blurry picture (which it sort of was in a ghost like way) ans she forgot all about the special meaning it had. Sorry everyone, and even if she did still have the picture, I wouldn’t know how to put it up.
    3. It wasn’t night time when my nana took the picture, but it got dark later on the tour.
    4. In the story, it mentioned that we showed the picture to the tour guide and that’s when she told us that my nana was standing about on the spot where that happened, cause the guide remebered looking back to see if the other people in the tour keeping up and she saw my nana take the photo.
    5. Yes, I do love the Jonas Brothers so much. They’re my favorite band and actors. They rock and they’ll always have a place in my heart. I am a teen, so I talk about them like this. I don’t care if you make fun. Anyways…
Hope that answered your ‘questions’. Thanks for the comment.
    Peace Love Jonas

It is very sad, actually, she lived on the side of the street at a house. Her grave, along with family’s is in the front yard. The poeple who donated the property said that Colonial williamsburg can have it as long as they keep the graves there, and they did.
    Peace Love Jonas

I took that same ghost tour in early May 2011. It was pretty good. I took a ton of pictures and at first I didn’t think I had anything. Then, when we got home, my daughter and I sat down and looked through the pics one by one and actually we came up with a few good ones. One is taken through the window of a tavern (wish I could remember which one) and you can see the outline of a woman’s dress. But…there is no head to it! I have a second pic, also taken at a tavern, but this was the last stop on the tour…right across from the armory. This one has a face in one of the window panes. Very creepy.

The worst part of the tour is that it was at 7p.m. so it was still daylight out. I’d love to go on another tour after dark!
