Ouija Board and the Christ

Posted on September 30, 2010

My mom took me and my sister and brother to see Ghost Busters when I was nine. She took great issue with how lightly the spirit world was portrayed and spent 20 minutes after the movie in the parking lot telling us about the dangers of the occult.

She once played with a Ouija board when she was a young teen at a birthday party while all the adults were in the back yard. She said that furniture actually “walked” across the room and that all of the girls freaked out and never touched the board again. Now that we have the internet to connect us all, I’ve found many stories of Animated Furniture (as the phenomenon seems to be called).

My mom is Christian but my dad is not so while I was taught about Christ, we were not a regular church going Christian household. I accepted Christ into my heart around the age of nine I would guess. As I grew into my teenage years, I started to have a lot of doubts about what I believed just as most everyone else seems to. But the teachings of Christ, of forgiveness and acceptance, never left me and always felt true to my heart despite my issues with the many churches I had attended.

So when I was 15 and sitting around with my 2 friends, 2 siblings of one of them and then a friend of one of the siblings and they broke out the Ouija board, I wanted nothing to do with it. It was a summer day and only us teenagers were home. The house was a rambler with 3 bedrooms on one side and a central living room with kitchen / dining area on the other end of the house with a door to the garage. The garage was converted into a bedroom which is where we were all hanging out.

I refused to touch the board or ask it any questions but I wasn’t frightened by it either having been taught that Christ is greater than the occult. Everyone else was taking it very seriously except my one friend. They played for about 30 minutes and it was very harmless banter with the board. I don’t recall much of it all honestly. I just remember the non-believer laying on the bed telling them it was all bunk and then they asked the spirit where it was and the board replied on the bed and my buddy seemed to jump straight up from a laying down position.

We all had a good laugh, like I said, the mood was very relaxed. It was sunny outside, there were no chills in the air or anything remotely uncomfortable happening. But the others got tired of my friend’s denial of the boards connection to the spirit world so the older sister came up with the idea of testing the board.

One person would whisper something in another person’s ear and then they’d ask the board what was said but neither speaker nor listener would be touching the board. Over and over the board would get it right. They were sincerely testing the board and whispering very quietly. I never heard a whispered word but each time they would swear that the board was correct. But of course my friend was still calling BS.

Honestly, I think he was only going on about it being fake to such a degree to antagonize his older sister and younger brother who were absolute believers (in the board, none of these friends were religious at all).

Finally they asked me if I would whisper something to one of them. I told them that I would do better than that, I left the garage and walked alone through the kitchen, down the hall into the back bedroom and into the back outside-facing corner of the whole house. I whispered the name Jesus Christ and then walked back through the house and into the garage/bedroom.

I entered that room to the same ambiance with which I had left it. Good natured fun with a bunch of friends on a summer day. The board had been friendly and compliant to all questions asked and there was absolutely no tension.

They asked the Ouija board what I had whispered and the Ouija board responded #*CK OFF. The tone quickly changed and they put the board away and we all left the house for the afternoon.

They never pulled the board out in my presence again, or even mentioned it for that matter. Take from that what you will. For all that I don’t understand/agree with in the Bible, that day affirmed my faith in Christ for life.
