Odd Things About Local Troupe

Posted on August 14, 2011

I learned about this story from my late uncle about 30 years ago, when I was around 7 or 8 -years old. The story is so indelibly scary that it always haunted me, in particular I was alone.

My uncle used to be an amateur actor for a local folk troupe and often made a tour performance in our province. In many people’s eyes, he is a knowledgeable and can entertain people by many interesting things. But about his career, he rarely talk too much. One night, to keep me out of mischief, uncle told me about the story. As you know, Surrounding the opera there are many taboos, one of these taboos is that as you performing on a stage, if you perceived anything weird or paranormal, you’d better not to notify people around of that and you should otherwise get yourself into trouble, at least the unclean would haunt you and worst, you will risk your neck. These taboos are often heard as the superstitious and no one would seemingly take it seriously, at least so for my uncle, then a bold singer, before his scary encounter.

On a fierce cold winter afternoon, along with his troupe members, uncle was performing on a open stage, and facing the stage were crowded with local farmers enjoying the opera. Acting Baogong, a judge in chief famous for his upright and resourceful in Song Dynasty, uncle did a well job, always received rounds of applause from the audience. And some fans even positioned themselves onto both sides of the stage to viewing the opera more clearly.

Complacent, uncle glance at audience on the stage side and the weird draw his attention. There, between the place curtains overlaps, stood a woman in costumes wore by people in Song Dynasty. Maybe, an actress waiting for next show, my uncle thought. And soon he denied his ideas, for the woman stood there motionless for quite a while, then uncle cast a close look, which almost sent him melting to the ground, for the vaguely seen woman’s eyes was dripping drops of blood. Overwhelmed with fear, uncle make a half dozen mistakes evident enough to be noticed by the audience. And when the troupe head, an experienced middle aged man pop up in the middle of the stage “our actor fell ill with a full-blown cold the other day and now he need a rest” so someone else substituted my uncle. And audience continued their watching with relish, not knowing what happened on earth.

Backstage, the head asked secretly “what did you see just now?” Uncle told him all he had found. Thinking over what uncle had said, the head said “you act the judge so well, as if the judge came back to life.” He added “there must be a woman that had been murdered in Song Dynasty and buried under our stage. she mistook you for BAOGONG, the real judge in chief, and want you to take her revenge on the murderer. we can not do anything to appease the poor ghost, I am sorry.”

Afterwards uncle and the head burned incense for the ghost. And not long after that performing, uncle dropped out of the career, for he can not forgot the woman ghost dripping blood, and so did I, though I never saw it with my own eyes.
