Not Scary Just an Odd Thing

Posted on May 23, 2011

I was home alone when this happened, and have yet to find any logical explanation for what occurred. This wasn’t a showstopper, just something strange, something for which I can’t find a logical explanation.

I live in an apartment that’s going on nine years old, my mother and I are the original tenants, and I can say without a doubt it is the most unhaunted place I’ve probably ever been in. It is sunny and bright, and not a dark corner or negative spot lurks here. It’s on the second floor, and while I can hear other tenants occasionally, it is in general a very quiet and peaceful place. Vibrations felt from others walking around, cleaning, etc. are virtually unheard of, and occur only when something extremely heavy is dropped. Nothing has ever happened that’s strong enough to physically move a piece of furniture or item, as the place is well-built, well-insulated and without drafts. I’ve never once felt in danger or even spooked a day I’ve lived here, and have spent many hours alone happily, even whole nights by myself and felt utterly at ease. All in all, it has been a home we’ve enjoyed immensely, and many good things have come into our life while living here.

My one and only experience that I can describe as paranormal happened recently in this apartment. I’ve not seen, heard or felt anything else since, and haven’t been able to recreate the occurrence, so as to debunk it. I love- and always have- horror movies and books, especially ghost stories. So seeing or reading something of that nature doesn’t set off “activity” or fear for me. Being an only child who’s spent a great deal of time by myself in my life, I’ve never been afraid of basements, attics or having a bedroom alone. I am definitely no magnet for “paranormal” activity and would say I’m a skeptic.

I was sitting at my computer one afternoon here, and I got the oddest sensation that someone was watching me from my bedroom doorway. Since no one was home, this made no sense, and of course I saw nothing when I turned. I have big windows in my apartment, but my blinds were drawn and since I’m on an upper floor, it’d be hard for anyone to stare at me anyway. Nonetheless, I looked out, just because the feeling was so potent – no one there. Then I felt something I’ve only heard described before, never actually experienced for myself- the little hairs on the back of my neck stood up and the room got quite chilled, as if the “energy” in the room was changed instantly somehow. Now, I’ve had, at times, up to ten pieces of electronic equipment in this bedroom, and never, ever felt such a thing. So for that to occur, I can’t explain it off easily as high amounts of electricity affecting my mind or something. It was a sunny day and there were no storms in the area. The feeling of being watched, as if by something invisible but “intelligent”, didn’t go away for hours, and it was very uncomfortable. Again, this is in a home where discomfort is the last thing I ever experience.

A little while later, I started noticing something incredibly odd happening. I have a small personal fan that sits in the same spot on my bathroom vanity everyday. I use it to dry the shower tile more effectively, as well as the hand-washables I hang up on the shower rod once a week or so. The fan was running that day, to do it’s typical job, facing the shower wall as it always does. However, each time I walked in the bathroom, after I’d felt that strange presence behind me at the computer, the fan was facing a different direction.

At first I dismissed it, thinking that I could have brushed against it without knowing it. The fan is quite sturdy, and doesn’t shift around on it’s own, nor is there any other source of air in the room capable doing of such a thing. In the bathroom, there’s no windows, and neither the A/C or heat was on that day. Even if I’d had one of those two things running, the sole vent in the room had never put out enough air to move anything, let alone that fan. But every time I came in the room that day, the fan was once again moved, and I kept paying very close attention to the direction it was in when I walked out of the room. The vanity it’s on is very solid, being about three feet wide and is on top of a solid wood cabinet. There’s just no way to shake something into moving on there, either by changing direction or falling over- believe me, I’ve tried to figure it out since then, many times! The final time I left it running that day in the room, I purposely put it straight across from my mirror, so that I’d know for sure it wasn’t my mind playing tricks on myself. When I walked by, about 30 minutes later, the fan had turned a full and exact 180 degrees and was now facing the doorway of the bathroom. I was so spooked that I unplugged the fan and kept it unplugged for days.

The feeling that had nagged me went away, and has thankfully stayed away, after a few hours that day. I plugged the fan back in it’s normal vanity spot a few days later and have witnessed no more odd activity. No moving of the fan uncaused by my own hand, no cold spells, no feeling of being watched. I have no explanation, other than something was trying to show me that even a skeptic like me can witness an unrequested paranormal experience!
