My Great Grandpa and His Race with the Undead

Posted on March 22, 2011

(Dedicated to my granny who has more than her share of true ghost stories – her childhood was creepy!)

When I was just a kid I spent the night with my grandmother all the time and every night before bedtime I’d ask her to tell me the story of the ghost that chased after my Grandpawpaw. After she would get me snug into bed she would start…

When I was a little girl me and my family lived in a part of the woods in Oklahoma. We had just moved in and we were getting ready for bedtime. My daddy and momma just laid down after tucking us in and as soon as they laid their head on the pillows they heard a sound like a cowbell just jingling and jangling around and around the house. Well my daddy got angry thinking someone was fooling around outside. So he got up went to the door and hollered “Ya’ll best be getting home or I’ll come out there!” So he would wait by the door everything quiet outside so he would think the pranksters were done and he would close the door lock it and head on up to bed.

As soon as his head hit that pillow that fool was at it again ringing that cowbell. By now my daddy was very angry, he ran outside no shoes on and started running around the house trying to chase it! He ran forwards around the house the bell ringer would do the same if he ran the other way the bell ringer would instinctively run the other way.

So my daddy asked my momma to come out there and they would see if they could meet it in the middle. So when they tried this new way daddy and momma crept on the bell they found each other not the bell ringer. The bell ringer was in front of the house and not behind it. They didn’t understand what was going on they knew that one of them would have seen the person if they had passed them.

They were both scared they ran in and locked the door and let the bell ringer be.
