My Best Friend Manong

Posted on July 9, 2011

I was at age 3 when I remembered having this friend named Manong (in Asian that means “Sir”). My parents were doing laundry in the kitchen and they left me alone in my room with my TV on. I was on my bed sucking on my bottle when my window opened. A cold wind flew in. A figure of a man appeared. We talked and laughed. We became friends and I knew all about him. My mom came inside my room and asked me who I was talking to. I said “Manong? He’s my new best friend!” my mom gave me a weird look and left. After she left Manong came back.

In the morning’s I would get a plate and fill it with food. I would go outside and leave it on this oak tree we had. I told my mom about it and she actually believed me. She never saw Manong? But only I did. I was his best friend. He would protect me when something was wrong, he would always cuddle me when I’m scared or just had a bad dream?

As I grew up at age 6 I still saw Manong but when my dad took me to America I didn’t see Manong again. I went home again and that same oak tree was their… but no Manong?

I know what he is attracted to. He’s attracted to cigarettes and well he looks like a man from a gold rush time. But well he’s very tall.

Can you please help me understand why I’m not seeing him anymore? Thank you

Manong? I’ve been studying the culture of a certain South East Asian country, the word sounds familiar, I think it’s from the Visayan dialect, it’s a title often given to an older man like big brother, uncle of the sort. You mentioned that he lives in a tree, well as far as my knowledge of mythical creatures from that area, I could say it’s an ‘Engkanto’, it’s an elemental entity that is grouped among the fairy subcategory. Many folklore and accounts say that this type of entity is friendly toward friendly or good natured people. It is said that they can easily be seen by children. Although they may sound good and friendly, many are known to be malevolent and would cause disorder or sickness to people who is unfortunate enough to aggravate it (knowingly or unknowingly), and they are often blamed for disappearance of young children and spreading disease. They are also known to get attached to people and become quite sensitive to people they get attached to. I’m not sure about what happened in your case, but I think it felt very lonely when you left it, it is either it moved on somewhere else or somebody had driven it away from where it used to live.

Thank you guys from the information you have given. Manong is still missing. I found out that “other” things lived in my house. I foud out dwarfs, ghosts, and elves lived in it too, But they are BAD!! They made my guy cousin go to the hospital, the hit my friend with a rock!

mabe because he is looking for you but you never know you both mite find each other again

  3. Haley says:

Manong could have been a spirit who wasn’t at rest.
You talking to him and everything else you did may have made him happy and peaceful. He may have finally crossed over.

“Manong” is an Ilocano word from the province of Ilocos (located on the northern part of the Philippines), i believe. I think it does mean “sir”… everyone, including people from Manila use this word to refer to a man out of respect.

  5. eric182 says:

In asian it means sir?Haha wow. How could none else catch that?

  6. Buddy says:

I believe that the word sir is much too honorific for the word Manong. ‘Sir’ is an old English word that means ‘My Lord’, and I don’t think it’s the appropriate translation for it, or rather there is no direct English Equivalent like in the case of the word ‘Kuya’ in which can only be translated in English as ‘Older Brother’.
I have also been reading about black elves, though it seems that misconception between elves and dwarfs are rampant. Your house is probably infested with both Elves and Gnomes in your case is called ‘Laman Lupa’. But I have never seen any definitive reports about ghosts sharing the same space as elemental spirits like elves and gnomes. Elemental spirits are highly territorial and they would rather not share their space with other entities, and it’s probably one of the reasons why they hospitalized your cousin. I strongly suggest that you should have your house exorcised.

how can a 3 year old toddler remember what happened on his/her early years..
    ?

    • Caretaker says:

It is a fact that some people can recall events at that age. I can recall some events that happened when I was only 2 years old

    • Buddy says:

I agree on this, I can also recall memories when I was three. Though I don’t rely much on those memories since most of them are faint and fragmented.

    • Marielle says:

I have a good memory. I can remember anything that happens. But if its something bad, then its still in my memory.

  8. pancho says:

one more thing, “manong” means “kuya” or big brother in the philippines, not “sir”
