Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

I do not know how to tell the story but will do as best I can. I live in Norway and in a town right outside the capitol not known for hauntings or other stuff like that except one building, far way from where I live about a 15 minute drive.

When I was younger I lived in a house that my parents had built and moved in to at the time I was born. But still I would wake up in the middle of the night at people walking up and down the stairs and people in the living room just walking around nothing more.

My room was on the first floor not far from the entrance and the stairs. Wall in wall to me was my older brothers room and next to his my parents. So all the rooms were close only the living room and kitchen were up stairs.

My parents were young people at the time and often had late night visitors from friends so was used to people being up late and making noise. And every time I had a nightmare they came down to me if I was calling for them even if they had a little loud music on. Only if they were sleeping they would not come at once.

The strange was when waking up from the walking in the living room or just up and down the stairs. As young I had my door open and light in the hall so could see the stairs (I was afraid of the dark), but no one was there and when I was calling for my parents no answer, nothing it was just sound. And just being around 5 I did not go and check just stayed in bed and tried to ignore it. I think the sound was not every night but still remember it regularly.

I moved out when I was 9. My parents had built a new house in the same neighborhood, just saying they wanted more space. The strange is my older brother have later let me know that he heard the footsteps too, but he has joked that he heard Michael Jackson dance steps up there (he was a big fan in the 90s) so I know I was not alone to hear them, but maybe he as just making fun of me but with him you can never know but still he brought it up, never really confronted my parents with it, have theories that it could have had something to do with it but doubt it. They are not the believing kind.

I never have had a bad vibe in the house go by it almost every day and only remember good times but still the footsteps still really hunt me. I do not know if a ghost or something but still know my parents built the house and that does not make any sense with ghost in a new house I feel. And is 21 years now but still the sound did not follow me into the new house and still from time to time think of that sound 12 years later.

I like to think it was my childish imagination going wild, but made me scared of the dark and not wanting to go to the bathroom at night. But the stranger never heard it by day.
Has anyone any theories about it?
