I was out with my dog one Tuesday, late evening, roughly twilight, (Also, my dog is called Lucky, she’s a Shiba Inu puppy, for those who are interested) but while she was sniffing round a tree she got all scared and ran behind me, hiding behind my legs. At first I laughed and thought she was just playing, because she’s never scared of anything, but when I turned round she started barking and ran off behind a nearby parked car and she wouldn’t come out no matter what I tried.
I went over to the tree to see if it was a cat or something that had spooked her, see if I could chase it away, but I was met by two bright green eyes. There was a figure, a teenage boy, staring right at me, leaning against the tree. To say I was startled was an understatement, and I was about to run when he reached towards me, clearly upset that I was scared. I told him I had to go and started to walk away but he said my name, clear as day, and I just stopped. He asked me to stay with him, he was lonely, he never had anyone to talk to. I asked him his name, he said it was Colin. I asked him how he died, he said he was shot, he had been in the war.
I commented about the war in Afghanistan and how so many had died there already. He half-smiled, told me I was way off, he then gestured to his clothes, and I hadn’t noticed before, but they were ridiculously old fashioned. WWII he said, he had joined the army early. He said that they had been in love, but the girl’s parents had told him that he wasn’t good enough. He had been asked to prove his love for her, like rest of her suitors. He went to war for her, but never came back.
He said that she had lived on the street in which we were standing. I cried, and asked her name, and if she still alive. He said her name was Rose, but he never saw her on the street, didn’t know if she had stayed there or not. Then, as one of the front doors of the houses opened, he faded away, the half-smile still on his face.
I walked back over to the car that Lucky was still hiding behind, tickled her ears and put her back on the leash. As I stood up I saw an elderly woman standing at her open front door, staring at the tree I saw Colin standing against. I had a fleeting “what if” moment and chanced it. I asked her if her name was Rose, she nodded and smiled, though she wasn’t very shocked that I had asked her. I smiled, told her that Colin still loved her. She told me she knew and grinned as a single tear rolled down her cheek, she then turned her attention back towards the tree and blew it a kiss. I asked her how she knew, and she told me that she’s been told about Colin many times before, and that was why she was still living in the same house. I just hope that fate will let them meet sometime soon, they’ve missed each other for too long.
