Coffin-Decorating craftsman, called Wang, told me about this odd story.
Le’s start by a back knowledge that in China people will worship their dead beloved by burning paper Yuanbao for them, Yuanbao, also called gold Yuanbao, is made of gold and served as money in ancient China.
Once Wang was invited to a farm house where a man has been in a coma for two days. Wang was curious that this man was not admitted to hospital. “Why not send him to a hospital?” Wang asked his relatives and nobody responded. “I can not cure him without knowing the truth,” Wang insisted.
Finally one of the man’s relatives tell the truth. The man lying in coma, surnamed Li, was a cop and got hooked on gambling to a point where every day he will gamble late into night. And one night, after he finished gambling, it was 2 am in the morning, one of his friends suggested him not to go home because it was too late. But that night Li was eager to go home, not accepting his friend’s opinion.
So he left for his house. On the way home he saw a couple people ahead of himself scurrying along the road. “Wait!” he shouted, thinking they can keep him company on his trip. “We are going to pick up gold, if you want, follow us” one of them said without even turning his head around.
On hearing gold, Li got excited and before thinking over he trotted following them. Presently Li viewed a mountain densely-littered with shining gold. Stooping and speechless, Li collected gold frantically and soon Li crowded his pocket with gold. “Let’s get moving, young man, the watchman is coming.” And soon Li returned home.
Entering his room, Li shouted at his son excitedly “I made a fortune tonight!” It was then his son found that Li’s pocket full of paper yuanbao, and his son laughed. “If that is real gold, you can’t carry it, it’s so heavy.” These words sent Li collapsing to the ground and he lost consciousness.
Somehow, Wang dragged Li out of coma and then Li swore that night he actually saw real gold yuanbao with his own eyes. To convince his family of his experience he led people to the place where he picked up the gold yuanbao. And to his scare he found nothing but a tomb where there were a lot of paper yuanbao around, and any sober people could tell at once it was made of paper.
