True Ghost Tales

My family moved into a large property called ‘Gladstone villa’ in the former mining town of Bargoed in the South Wales valley’s during the 1960′s. There was my grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Higgs and their only daughter Caroline, who was is my mother. She married my father Douglas in April 1968 but stayed at my grandparents home and things were fine but it was soon after I was born in the summer of 1969 that strange things started to happen. Being a baby I was too young to remember when it first started but my mother said it started quietly in the attic when they heard a noise like something jumping down, when they took a look they saw the hatch was open! It eventually occupied itself in the main bedroom that was my grandparents and we would hear noises regularly. It was mainly during the evening that we would hear noises that simply defy rational explanation, thing like walking about the bedroom when we would all be downstairs watching TV and we would always turn the TV down to hear it more clearly, other noise we’d hear would be what only could be described as furniture moving, and the occasional loud bang! when it was quiet we would be brave enough to check out the noise, my granddad was always in front and me behind, but when we got to the bedroom we couldn’t find anything to account for the noise!

A family friend Mrs. France who would visit us most evenings wouldn’t believe us at first when my grandmother told her it was haunted, I remember her saying it was the vibration from the traffic outside causing the noises! Her belief system was soon to be challenged when the paranormal phenomena started when she was there one night, the lights went off and on, and we all knew that it wasn’t an electrical fault! Mrs. France said knew of a medium and would get him involved.

When he arrived at Gladstone villa he asked a few questions first, then he began, he challenged the spirit to perform by knocking the ceiling with a brush, and surely enough the spirit promptly knocked back! The medium at some point went into a trance to try and make contact but failed to get a name, but when he came out of it he then told us that there is indeed a presence, and confirmed it to be an earthbound spirit!

Another time a priest came to bless the property and we did have quiet for a few short months.. but it did return! this time eventually showing itself. One evening when we were all watching TV my mother just so happened to look towards the doorway and saw the figure of a monk standing behind the sofa! she looked away and when she looked back it was gone! we didn’t see it but she later described it as a typical monk complete with brown habit and hood, she didn’t see his face!

We would have regular activity such as electrical cables being pulled,some minor poltergeist activity such as a milk bottle being thrown at my granddad. I remember on one particular occasion being alone in the bedroom and I felt someone or something jumping on the bed, like an animal, when I looked up a little later there was nobody there!

We had the ghost for seven years and my grandmother gave it a name, she called him ‘JOHNNY’
