I Worked at a Haunted Nursery

Posted on July 2, 2011

I’ve had many supernatural experiences in my life, but there is one in particular that I’m going to tell you now which is still on-going.

Two years ago, I started work at a children’s nursery in the middle of the city I now live in. This nursery is connected to a college, and we have children who’s parents are either students there, or teach, as well as children from the community. At first glance, you’d never think it would have it’s fair share of spirits, until you found out that the nursery and connecting college used to be an old workhouse.

From almost the first moment I set foot inside the building, I had a feeling that there was – something – there, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was, not that I really paid it much attention as I was too focused on trying to pass the interview in the first place! About a week after I first started, I’d keep seeing things out of the corner of my eye, shadows mostly, but they didn’t seem particularly threatening so I said nothing – after all, I was still the new girl, and didn’t want to seem weird!

It was a couple of weeks later, when I was on an early shift (we start at 7.45 on those shifts), I got there early one morning and saw another workmate standing just outside the entrance doors. We said our good mornings, then she asked me to stay and wait with her until the others came. “Why?” I asked, “because they say this place is haunted, and I don’t want to wait by myself, because it scares me” she replied. So, I waited with her, all the time being thankful I really had sensed something after all, and it wasn’t just me going mad!

After that, the occurrences started happening more frequently, almost daily. Sometimes I’d see shadows and figures out of the corner of my eye, other times I’d hear someone calling my name, but when I’d look up and ask who it was who called me, they’d either be no one there, or those I was with would deny it. There was one occasion where I was standing at the sink washing up one evening – the children were playing on the other side of the room, when I felt someone tug on my sleeve. I looked down, thinking a child wanted my attention, but no one was there. That was two years ago, and a lot more’s happened, both to me and fellow workmates.

One afternoon I was wheeling the lunch trolly back to the kitchen, and I’d just turned the corner into the corridor when I saw someone up ahead of me just vanishing into the kitchen and the door closing. Thinking nothing of it, I follow them in, then realize that the kitchen’s empty, the only other way out was a door into the college that was locked and had three chairs stacked against it. Another time, a workmate who was on an early shift got there early, and distinctly heard the sound of someone singing, even though she was the only one in the building at the time.

Last Christmas time me and two other girls on the early shift went down to our end of the nursery (it’s divided up, with one end housing the baby and the 1-2′s rooms, and the other end housing the 2-3′s and preschool rooms) and found half the Christmas decorations had been quite literally torn down as if someone didn’t want them up there. A few times a few children have looked at a particular corner of the room and smiled and waved at something the rest of the staff couldn’t see.

Sometimes though, the spirits aren’t always so nice – a few occasions the children have started screaming and crying whilst pointing at something we can’t see and clinging onto us for dear life, and it’s not until I say, “stop it, go away, you’re scaring the children!” that they stop crying and start playing again.

A lot more’s happened, but if I carry on I could quite likely fill an entire book. Needless to say, a lot of things go on, especially in the autumn and winter months, so it will be interesting to see what’s going to happen, if anything, this winter.
