Higher Education Does Not Remove a Belief in the Paranormal

Posted on September 6, 2007

Some skeptics say that it is mostly the ignorant and superstitious that believe in paranormal subjects like ghosts and hauntings. According to the Skeptical Inquirer magazine this simply isn’t true. They conducted a poll of college students and found that about 23% of freshman and 34% of seniors believed in the paranormal. It seems that highly educated people still believe in subjects like ghosts, witches, clairvoyance, hauntings, spiritual or psychic healing, and demons.

In 2001 Gallup conducted a nationwide poll that indicated younger people are more likely to believe in the supernatural than older ones. This would come as no surprise as younger children tend to believe in things like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. As children grow and learn they are, unfortunately, discouraged from exercising their imaginations and tend to believe less.

how long has this been going on? does he wake up in the middle of the night sleep walking or have serious nightmares. is there unexplained things happening around your household? how old is your house? does he give you a blank stare? has he mentioned of things and places you know he has never been to before? is he an alcoholic or drug user? constant migraines? how is he at work? or does he work? not enough info to do an assessment.

    Hello Michelle,

Demon possession happens very infrequently .. it is more likely a mental illness. Will the gentleman agree to go and see a doctor. That is the first step in getting him help. Seeing ghosts etc is not really a part of possession. I have seen them, and demons, since I was 2 and I am not possessed.

Look for a simple answer first. Get him to a doctor, and then a psychiatrist. Let them assess him first.

Man…. Seeing the ghost has nothing to do with demonic possession. It’s more like a paranormal experience. Almost all exorcist who fight the demons can see the spirits, but they are not possessed by demon. It depends on the strength of your heart to defend against demonic possession. If you have a strong heart, you won’t get possessed by demons. My advice is, you should go to a priest, paranormal and the last is psychiatrist, if the first & the second doesn’t work. Don’t go to a psychiatrist at first.

It could be a latent case of schizophrenia as well. I’ve witnessed this first hand. My father had a psychotic break when I was a teen…it was really scary, and we didn’t know what was going on. He was hospitalized and they were able to control it for the most part with a medication called Lithium. He still had his moments but, he was no longer hearing voices and seeing things that weren’t there, or if he was still seeing it, it made him stop talking about it so much.

I’ve often questioned if a possession could have occurred as well…you just never know. Maybe the medication had just had a sort of numbing effect where he didn’t notice it as much?… I really don’t have the answer, even though I wish I did. It would certainly help explain a lot of things that happened during my adolescence.

In any case, I sincerely hope he gets better and you are able to find the answers you are looking for. My thoughts are with you.
